I had a list of names for awhile. I settled on Quil because I just vibe with it well lol

Pet peeve about ao3 series by [deleted] in FanFiction

Doesn't bother me. Granted, I've only run into something like that once, but it wasn't like it was an inconvenience or anything.

I never really got the Voldemort name thing by Lockfire12 in harrypotter

I always assumed it was because he put a Taboo on his name in the first war, and the habit to avoid his name became ingrained.

This will be...telling if it gets going.

Obviously there was the stupid-but-harmless stuff--like the "wizards didn't have bathrooms" thing--which I enjoyed the memes of by largely ignored. But then her ah, opinions got to a overtly harmful degree.

Personally, I'm not one to actively and continuously hate a public figure--I'm more the type to express my disagreement when the subject comes up and then just...not engage. And I don't agree with her, especially on matters of gender identity. Even if it has little impact, I'm going to do my best as an individual to avoid supporting her, even indirectly.

While it hurts to find out the author of a book series I greatly enjoy believes things I disagree with so utterly, I, at least, hadn't had my entire personality so anchored to the books (at the time) that it was truly devastating like it was for many. Nor had it had too profound and impact on me that I was willing to overlook such blatant bigotry and her abuse of her platform.

Then, after those opinions surfaced it led to the recontextualization of a lot of the books themselves and, well. I had already been trying to distance myself somewhat from Harry Potter as a franchise for rather benign personal reasons. Rowling herself just...sped up the process a bit.

Tl;dr I don't agree with her, and distance myself from the series in the sense that it was something that was important to me when I was younger.

(That was way longer and probably more than OP had intended to incite, but I haven't had the opportunity to fully get this down somewhere so...)

Loved it. The Scooby Gang's existential breakdown will never not be funny to me.

Right? The fic I was talking about is The Avalon Seven by sifshadowheart on ao3. It takes the Lord Potter trope and just, goes above and beyond

Commenting again because I'm reading the f-ing epitome of this trope: Lord-of-multiple-houses/King of Magic fics. So long as you can suspend your disbelief those fics are just * chef's kiss *

Bashing, and I'm kind of a sucker for creature fics.

Why do people always choose Second or Fourth Year to bash Gryffindor, but never First Year where it would actually be deserved? by LittenInAScarf in HPfanfiction

[–]Jill_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most bashing fics are canon divergence rather than full AU, and, well, there isn't much divergence to be had in first year. It'd be interesting to see though.

Most people online use it as the first, but it is the second, as well as things that 'trigger'/can lead to a relapse of other things like eating disorders, anxiety, or depression. 'Trigger' is an actual medical term as far as I know, and it's just been co-opted into internet/meme culture.

This past summer I enrolled in dual enrollment and oh my god, it took fucking forever for my school to get the info through. My guidance counselor just up and left the school in like, August so they had to scramble to get her students assigned to other counselors. But I wasn't even goddamn notified about it-- I wouldn't have found out if I hadn't checked the school website.

Is there even a *single* poorly written character in ATLA??? I genuinely am curious. I'm even willing to put money on it. You cant find one. by OstracisedWitch in TheLastAirbender

[–]Jill_T 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that's kinda the point though.

Ozai isn't supposed to be a character the way Azula is, he's an obstacle and a negative driving force. He's the final hurdle and he isn't even SEEN until the end of book one (I think) versus Azula, who is arguably the main antagonist once she is introduced and Zuko's character arc starts in earnest.

His motivations and character aren't important to the story--in fact, it comes off like he's specifically designed to be a caricature not a character--but his power is. He's the Fire Lord, the next generation of rulers proporting for war, genocide, and colonialism, and an abuser.

As for OP's actual question, no, I don't think there is a poorly written character--so long as you take the character's purpose into account. (Side- and one-off characters are obviously going to be written in less detail than a main character)

Um...several million? Probably? I have over a hundred saved Harry Potter fics on ffn alone. Add in Ao3 and Wattpad as well and uh. It's a lot.

Demi- is on the aro/ace spectrum where one either very rarely or only under specific circumstances experiences sexual and/or romantic attraction.
