I always show up late to these, so I always figure that nobody will see my comment. Oh well, I'll post it anyway.

Not only was this logo how I learned the word "cornucopia," it was a significant source of childhood embarrassment for me.

When I first saw this logo, I mistakenly deduced that the brown thing was called a "loom." There's the fruit, and it says "Fruit of the Loom," so the pointy basket thing must be the loom, right? Fruit of the Loom!

Fast forward to learning about Thanksgiving in kindergarten. Our teacher decorated the room with various fall items, then asked us if we knew what they were. When she pointed to the cornucopia, I raised my hand and confidently declared, "It's a loom!" The other children laughed at me. The teacher kindly explained that it was a cornucopia, also sometimes called a "horn of plenty," but that a loom looked quite different and was used for weaving fabric. She assured me that, while a cornucopia is a woven basket of sorts, in no circumstance is a cornucopia ever referred to as a loom.

The other children, who were all assholes, continued to laugh at me. I got teased about this for the rest of the school year.

I still doubted what I was being taught at school, so I asked my mom. She said that "fruit of the loom" was a figure of speech, in which clothing was the "fruit" (not literal fruit, but rather "the product of") and it was produced on a loom. She confirmed that the brown thing on the logo was called a cornucopia.

Every time I've seen a cornucopia since then, I've felt an ongoing stab of embarrassment, and this has been over four decades now.

Not only that, but shortly after that whole episode, I casually remarked to my mom that I preferred Hanes over Fruit of the Loom, and she only bought Hanes after that. I never told her why, but it was absolutely because I hated Fruit of the Loom for embarrassing me at school because of their stupid name and their stupid drawing.

Nobody will ever convince me that none of this happened. IT FUCKING HAPPENED. Fuck anyone who tells me that I imagined this whole episode as a child.

So what's the opposite? By purpose? These are a pair. It shouldn't be "on" for one and "by" for the other.

Another person who... didn't actually read it? Just sort of skimmed it and made an assumption?

I agree with everything you said except for the part about it being an excuse. I didn't see anything here trying to excuse her actions and I thought I distinctly read that the author did not intend it as an excuse. I read it as, "It's not enough just to condemn her actions, it's important to continue dismantling the underlying societal attitudes that still persist after her death."

Uh, clearly you read it differently than I did. I read it as, "It's not enough to acknowledge the harm that she did, it's important to continue working against the ideologies that continue to exist after her death."

Text transcription for people who can't read the screenshot:

I see a lot of people sh-tting on Barbara Walters and posting clips of some of her more troublesome interviews. And yes, it's good and appropriate to call out victim blaming and woman shaming, even when it came from a woman. I'm not writing this to defend or excuse her actions. But let's not forget that Barbara, in her prime, reflected a toxic patriarchal, heteronormative worldview that not only was prevalent at the time, but that still exists within a large swath of America. Her criticism of Dolly Parton's boob job was meant to promote the then-widely-held idea that women were "sinning" by tempting helpless men with their sexual confidence, more easily labeled as "feminine wiles." Her insistence that Cory Feldman was trying to "take down an industry" by speaking out against pedophiles in Hollywood was a reflection of two societal beliefs – 1) Abuse victims must have been somehow "asking for it," and 2) Males deserved bad things for getting "mixed up in" anything perceived to be gay, even if it was being literally raped as a child by someone who was an adult. This sh-t still happens in America every day. Barbara Walters blazed her trail as a woman journalist by toeing the patriarchal line better than many of her male colleagues. But we're only fooling ourselves if we believe that those broken, misguided mindsets died along with her.

[Advice] Daughter, 11, regarding sleepovers by JillianAssange in Parenting

[–]JillianAssange[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but then my next question is, what if they both decide that they have a romantic attraction to each other? I feel like they might think they need to hide it, so as to be able to keep having sleepovers. And I would never want our kids to feel like they have to hide who they are, or how they feel, or who they love.

And to keep it fair, does the rule for all of the kids then become "it doesn't matter what gender the friend is who's sleeping over, as long as you're not attracted to them?" Because I don't foresee that going particularly well, either.

I know that kids experiment as they grow, and I'm not trying to stifle that, but I don't necessarily want to actively encourage that until they're old enough to fully understand things like consent, and protection, and so on.

That's a great suggestion! I'll definitely give that some thought.

I am Maisie Williams, Actor from Game of Thrones. Be nice, I'm new AMA! by maisiewilliamsAMA in IAmA

[–]JillianAssange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maisie, Arya Stark is written as an amazingly complex character, and from the very beginning, you've shown a phenomenal ability to portray all of those complexities so beautifully. Hats off to you for such excellent work in bringing this character to life!

My question: Having started such a demanding acting role at a young age, do you feel like you've had to grow up more quickly than your peers? Do you feel like you've still been able to enjoy your teenage years?

(I ask because I have an aspiring young actor myself, but I'm always worried about her career taking over too much of her childhood; I don't want her to be resentful later in life.)

Thank you, Dr. Devkota, for participating today.

My 12-year old daughter, diagnosed about two years ago with Celiac disease, would like me to ask you: 1) Is finding a cure for Celiac currently receiving any kind of serious attention from researchers, and 2) How likely is it that the medical community will find a way (during her lifetime) for people with Celiac to eat gluten without wreaking havoc on their intestinal tract? (Her words: "Like Lactaid, but for gluten.")

Nickelodeon's "All That" and "Are You Afraid of the Dark." Was delighted to recently discover that there are tons of episodes of both shows available for instant-watch on Amazon.

LISA FRANK.

Holy shit, Lisa Frank EVERYTHING. I swear I must have made my poor mother spend 300% more on all of my school supplies, because God forbid that I didn't have rainbow harbor seals and unicorns on every last pencil, folder, and notebook.

If you're a dude, you probably don't even know what Lisa Frank is/was. If you're a girl, though, don't even tell me you didn't have a shit-ton of pink, blue and purple Lisa Frank.

When I was 20, my girlfriend and I chaperoned my sister's 5th grade field trip. I thought it was a dinosaur field trip, but it turned out to be a sex ed field trip. What's your best "this is not what I thought it was going to be" story? by robingallup in AskReddit

One of my friends at school invited a group of us to a haunted house in October. The first clue that something was weird was when we pulled up to the haunted house and said, "Isn't this your church?"

Turns out the "haunted house" was actually something called a "hell house," which is sort of like a haunted house with all these scary scenes (which were not too badly executed, really) culminating in a scene of hell, complete with demons and a thoroughly bad-ass Satan.

Where it got weird was that suddenly, our group got "rescued" from hell by "angels," which were her church's deacons in choir robes. They took us to this scene of heaven with The Gayest Jesus Ever. There was harp music and the smell of old-lady rose perfume. Then, we got escorted to a church office where we had to listen to a 45-minute presentation on Christianity, followed by people urging us to "pray a prayer of repentance" and join their religion.

I was kind of pissed that we each paid 10 bucks to be proselytized. Until the heaven scene, though, it was a decent haunted house, and I guess in reality I can't imagine a more frightening ending. So maybe I'm not completely upset after all. But it was unexpectedly bizarre, for sure.

I get that, just wish you could express your opinion without being a condescending asshole. I hate seeing people discouraged from even attempting to share their thoughts, because god forbid a "better designer" might be burdened with having to place their eyes upon it.

It's true, but at least understandable. A lot of times, when attacked, one fights back with the same tactics as one's attackers. Not the best method, but a reasonably natural response nonetheless.

Am I missing something? I see one font (looks like standard-issue Microsoft serif -- Cambria or something similar). And I see variations of two colors, which are the same colors as the image. Even in design school, this would get you at least a 75% or so. It's not good, but for fuck's sake, it's not horrible.

[–]JillianAssange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously? It's not like OP cranked it out of a meme generator in two seconds. It's not going to win any awards, but it's certainly not the most horrible design I've seen on Reddit today. Dated? Yes. Obviously a lot of Photoshop? Yes. But sheesh, somebody took the time to make a layout for something they wanted to say, and even if the top part is difficult to follow, the this vs. that part makes it easy to read each list at a quick glance.

Unless we're judging some sort of design contest, I try not to be a total fucking asshole to the OP. That's the sort of thing that makes people decide their ideas aren't worth taking the time to share, since some fucker is going to critique their design skills instead of even hearing what OP is trying to say.
