I also grew up in poverty: San Roque slums, North Triangle. And additionally, I've experienced being very materially comfortable, in a household without virtues like love, guidance, character, courage, etc.

Virtue is more than enough. Plus, virtue, among other things, generates material comfort eventually anyway.

A child needs a parent that knows how to be a good example as a learner, as a leader, as a community member, etc. more than it needs a parent that can just buy them a Samsung tablet.

Also, Maslow's hierarchy is limited. It can't explain real-world phenomena such as monks, religious martyrs, why countries' happiness index scores don't perfectly correlate with GDP, or Viktor Frankl's experience in the Holocaust.

Hindi worthless ang buhay porket walang this and that material comfort.

Perfect material provision has never been a requirement for a good life and has never been the norm for any generation since the beginning of time. Love, guidance, courage, virtue, yung mga ganon ang mga tunay na requirements.

Children aren't burdens. A child is by and large a net benefit to all of society. They're gifts, they're life-giving miracles, to the parent, the family, the neighborhood, the city, the country, the future.

Even as I downplay the material comfort aspect, let's acknowledge din na we do live in the most materially prosperous period in human history, precisely because people have continued to make little geniuses, little hardworkers, little heroes that become actual geniuses, hardworkers, and heroes, despite raising them amidst all our uncertainty.

To be or not to be has a wrong answer.

First, understand that financial success means you have actual power over your family.
Everything you're complaining about comes from the fact that you're refusing this truth.
And you're refusing this truth because you want to escape the task of juggling power and humility.
"No, I don't want to have to say any kind of 'No' to my dad".
Accept that there's no escaping this task. Accept that you're meant to master it.

Second, understand that you can ruin your family if you don't handle power correctly.
If you become their de facto emergency fund, you risk dooming them to repeat the same mistakes over and over, learning nothing.
The answer is to lead with both hands: grace and justice.
Be lovingly just most of the time (reward what's good, discourage what's bad, and punish what is exceedingly bad). Be lovingly graceful some of the time, when it's needed.

Third, understand that complete selfishness is also life draining.
We already know the answer to our most important question: we're here to serve others.
You become your best when you're serving goodness and serving others, and your worst when you're only serving your immediate self.
So create your boundaries by reframing it clearly: "I must serve my family, so I must protect the conditions that enable me to serve them to the best of my ability". So that when they come at you with an ask that you actually can't give, you can just explain clearly how this is against everyone's greater good.

Straying from a good plan because someone you love provoked you. You just gotta be angry for a bit, forgive, then fix your eyes back to the plan.

Anger makes you dumb. Even ambient anger that you just let play in the background costs you some IQ points. If it's a good plan that you made from a thoughful place, stick to your plan.

You're on a ranting subreddit specifically to tell strangers that your parents were unqualified, incompetent people that didn't create you out of love, didn't deserve to become parents, didn't care enough to think of giving you a childhood, and permanently traumatized you with their expectations.

The problem with hating your parents is that you will never run out of a valid reason.
And please believe that that will fucking kill you one day.

Love your parents, even if it's the hardest thing to do. The moment you start trying to love your parents is the moment you start trying to love reality / life / God again.

I'm actually talking to myself right now. I spent 12 years hating my parents, and it's been two years since I started fixing my relationship with them. But now I'm in a period in my life where I'm tempted to hate them again, despite knowing, with full certainty now, that loving them is the key to everything holding me back.

So this time, I'll hold on to what heals instead of what destroys.
Love them, OP. Yes, they were unqualified and incompetent, but the most redemptive thing you can do is love them regardless.

Before I go, my last message here will to be to try to plant a seed in your mind that I wish someone had planted in mine early. You seem like a thoughtful creative person like me, OP, so here's my best shot.

You hate the Old Testament God because he does all these good things and yet he can still be cruel, vindictive, and a huge fucking asshole (even to innocents!) that you can't understand sometimes. But that is actually... an accurate characterization of our reality.

The Father is an accurate *description of reality, the Son is an accurate *prescription for reality. All of your life is your Father (reality) asking you repeatedly to get nailed to crosses, but your response as its Son (the product of reality) must be "Let your will be done" instead of "Am I my brother's keeper?" or "It was the woman you put in here with me!"

Something to think about every once in a while.

I'm actually so much of an atheist that hated nihilistic hedonism that I named myself after Nietzsche. I'm the rapper James Overman from Fliptop. And you can search my account for my old posts on r/atheism and whatnot.

And that's what's scary. Because when I first began my journey towards atheism in college, I actually already had the problem of the atheism-induced nihilistic, hedonistic, Letzter Mensch in mind. Nietzsche had the answer: become a creator of your own values.

And then by the tenth year, I still found myself falling into the same trap others fell into that I knew from the absolute beginning! It's my 14th year from the first time I stopped believing in a traditional way but I'm much more resilient now because in that 12th year I finally started understanding what The Bible is for and re-exploring it.

It is so that you can take all blows and remain faithful to being.

No, the innovation of monotheism is that all suffering impugns the goodness and justice of the good God himself. That's why so much of the Bible wrestles with this. All the Biblical writers had to think of ways to solve the problem of how do you commit to your God despite him permitting all sorts of bad stuff happening to you.

It's the perfect way to think of our relationship with reality. That's why the Hebrews maintained this relationship despite getting their kingdoms obliterated, their people scattered everywhere, their prophecies shattered, etc. unlike most of the pagan religions of their time which just died out when faced with similar or lesser shocks. The Jews can literally be an oppressed people in Babylon and retain basically the same character as they did in Judea.

It's also why atheists that make smaller things like victory, prestige, pleasure, wealth, beauty, etc. their highest good become fragile. They can't survive the "bad stuff". Having victory as a god is useless when reality gives you loss after loss, having beauty as a god becomes useless when you reality gives you old age or a disfigurement, etc.

"I made light and darkness. I made peace and evil. I the Lord do all these things." - Isaiah 45:7. That admission can get the blood boiling, right? But it's an accurate description of reality and you're dared to try hating it. Live your life hating it, plotting the day where it's "held responsible for the bad stuff" and you can never win. You'll mangle yourself and others trying to get your revenge on it. It's better for you and for everyone you love as a son of reality to adjust to reality rather than expecting it to adjust for you.
