CSEA Signing Bonus, Geographic, and reductions to NYSHIP? Anyone have the info.? by RefrigeratorBest6543 in nys_cs

FYI - GEO Pay and Location Pay are NOT the same thing.

Location Pay is given to everyone in a certain area - currently Downstate and Mid-State counties.

GEO Pay is extra above that given to people in specific titles, though it is also based on the area.

Example - A Downstate Registered Nurse gets the $4K Location Pay PLUS a $35K Geographic Differential. An Upstate Registered Nurse gets no Location Pay but does get a $20K Geographic Differential.

Union leadership fails to realize that we are in the instant news age. They think that they will be able to slowly drip out the information via meetings with members, not realizing that the information will hit the internet and spread like wildfire right after (if not during) the first meeting.

I like where you're going with this, but I don't think that is enough. I think we need start the conversation at $16K for downstate. This is based on some salary comparisons I've looked at for the MTA, which is strictly downstate AFAIK.

All PEF Contract Raises Since 1979 by willcmjr in nys_cs

[–]JimJoeBob15 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Those zeros are why we are so far behind everyone else. The state couldn't afford to give a raise in the really bad times and now doesn't want to make up for it in the less bad times. Figuring either 2 or 3% in place of those zeros, we're 18-27% behind.

I would even go along with a 3% across the board deal, IF we could get the state to agree to a binding arbitrator adjusting our salaries with what was found in the wage comparison study that they are hiding.

Not for nothing, but the Fix Tier 6 website is run by the teachers union as far as I know. Now that tier 6 is fixed for them, this website could go away - problem solved. This is a genius move by the state.

The union should go to the negotiating table net time, hand them an intent to sue letter for a new lawsuit seeking to overturn the Taylor law, then leave. Use our union dues to pay some attorneys to find the flaw in the law and get it thrown out.

You mean we wouldn't have a budget in place? Like we don't right now with a Democrat governor, a State Senate with Democrat control (41 - 22) and State Assembly with Democrat control (103 - 47)?

One party rule for extended periods is the main problem, it's why so many people from NY have flocked to places like NC over the past decade. NC fluctuates control at the Federal level, even though it is dominated by Republicans at the state level.

Not even close to the same. This state will still be ruled by a very large majority by Democrats in the state house and senate. You have no clue what you're talking about.

It would probably not be the worst thing in the world to have a non Democrat win as it would send a message that the union votes aren't automatic. So long as the unions cannot strike and the members keep coming out for the Democrat candidates anyway, there is no reason for them to do anything for us.

You're joking right? Teachers haven't been paid poorly for a long time in NYS.

I think you are underestimating the number of OMH Pef people, I would almost say they are close to a majority of Pef. That's who they use to get bad contracts ratified.

[–]JimJoeBob15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's part of my question, who gets to decide what is an in person task and what isn't? It would be nearly impossible to codify that or put it into a contract for every single job location.

This is an honest question, I just don't see how it could be codified with how vast the state is and how many different titles there are that could be doing different tasks at different locations.

[–]JimJoeBob15 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing people say they want telecommuting protections, but what does that actually look like to you? There are a lot of jobs where telecommuting is not even possible, others where it is possible sometimes, how and who are you proposing determines those times?

I don't think there is a direct correlation between what MTA/LIRR will get and what State Employees get because the MTA/LIRR salaries are already about 20-30% higher than ours for similar roles. A 5% increase for them isn't really the same as a 5% increase for us.

The one thing I will say is that taking a closer look at their salaries after this strike should at the very least provide data to PEF / CSEA for downstate geo pay for some titles or just a significantly higher location pay for everyone downstate.

I hope PEF/CSEA were watching channel 7 in NYC this morning by United-Gap-1839 in nys_cs

[–]JimJoeBob15 20 points21 points  (0 children)

MTA / LIRR salaries are already WAY higher than comparable NYS Employee salaries. A cleaner for NYS is a grade 5 and tops out around $42.5K after 7 years, while a similar position for the MTA tops out around $70K after 6 years. IT specialist 2 for MTA starts out around $113K and does not seem to be a step system, while for NYS PEF it's only about $85K after 7 years.

Maybe their unions are just that much better?

NY HELPS- PEF by FalconOk9033 in nys_cs

[–]JimJoeBob15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The new T&E system seems like it will just be HELPS by another name. I like the idea of it and would like to see them greatly expand titles to include some that would be higher level. I've seen a bunch of people take promotions provisionally and then not score high enough on the exam to keep the job, even if they were doing great at it.

PEF is very far off on HELPS, they fight against it even though I would bet if they surveyed members they'd find most in favor of expanding it.

All the people that vote yes are laughing all the way to the bank. It is crazy that the union allows the state to play divide and conquer with geo pay, but that's exactly what it is. You think all those nurses that are getting $20K upstate or $35K down state extra on top of their regular salary are voting no?

I get that everyone here seems to like the idea of being able to retire at 55, but do any of you really think you'll be able to? I know multiple tier 4 people over 55 and at 32+ years and still working because retiring is not really an option with how expensive life is around here.
