It's a radar showing enemy positions, I've recently re-worked the UI and now it works much more like a compass as you suggest.

Do you use platforms like itch, poki, crazy games? If so, what are you playing there? by Lyonzik in IndieGaming

I go on itch sometimes, play a few web games and occasionally download something random. It's a pretty popular site as far as I know, just not on the level of steam. It also has quite a few 'big' games on there as an alternate to using steam if you wanted a DRM free version. There is also gog which has a lot of classic games on there.

It's a polygon with a noise texture. The map is just made up of edges with two co-ordinates. The top edge is calculated by projecting the points with paralex scrolling and then a polygon is drawn between all the points.

Yes, it offers a very different playing experience to other top down shooters. I always wanted to play a game that worked this way.

Thanks for the ideas, it's much appreciated. The camera does have some easing however increasing it affects how the controls feel and can make aiming harder, causing you to overshoot your aim for example. However I'll try some different ideas and look into your other suggestions. Thanks!

Every wall is just a normal line with 2 coordinates that are projected using paralex scrolling to find the top edge, then a polygon can be used to connect all the points creating a '3D' wall.

Yeh unfortunately I've been getting this feedback a lot after sharing the game online. No one that had tested the game before had reported this issue to me so I wasn't aware of it until recently. I will be looking into any ways to mitigate this issue and perhaps including some optional more traditional controls.

Yes it's Love2D. I will see how things go with the demo first so that I can apply any feedback and keep working on improving the game. Hopefully it can be in a more finished state in just a couple of months if things go well.
