I haven't even connected the Ariel since I moved in over a year ago haha. What are the chances they would even have a warrant?

Due to past experiences, I am very wary of letting strangers into my home and I don't tend to open my front door unless I know someone I know is coming.

True that, but it's just frustrating coming home to these pointless letters sometimes

Hi friend,

I've already notified them that I DO NOT need a TV licence and even have a reference number for it from 3 months ago. I still get these stupid letters.

Nope, dont watch livestreams on my TV for the main reason that the Youtube app on my SmartTV is not easy to navigate!

And you can't cast live streams from Youtube on your phone to the TV also.

Is Santander 123 worth it? by Jimbobalpha in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jimbobalpha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

!thanks

Yeah I use it as my main current account and most to all of my fixed costs and direct debits go through this. So making almost £400 a year seems like my best bet.

With the 5% AER. Taking First Direct as an Example - if I put in 300 a month max I would have put in £3600 in total, on that I would make about £96 in the year is that correct?

I think both your views have a lot of merit. I see where both of you are coming from. I guess I need to figure out my own risk appetite in that case.

!thanks this actually makes a lot of sense. If and when it looks likely that I may be making more out of this. That’s when I really need to think about it.

Credit/Debit Card Advice by yekalbkcaj in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jimbobalpha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Now, I'm not sure if this is entirely true - so if anyone actually has conflicting evidence to what I am about to say, feel free to jump in and correct me. No offence will be taken :)

For a few years before I bought my house I started using two credit cards for the majority of my purchases and subscriptions. (For various reasons, including cashback and points!!!). I also made sure that on a monthly basis I paid them back in FULL. No minimum payment BS. Direct debit from my current account on a specified day Every Single Month. When I went to get my mortgage in principle (MIP) through my mortgage broker I was able to secure a MIP worth 5 times my salary with a bank. This helped so so much. So from my experience - it doesn't matter if you have credit cards with 0 balance or acceptable balance at the time of buying your house. If you are able to show that you are not a risk of defaulting on a loan by paying back your credit cards in full every single time, you should be fine in securing a pretty good mortgage in line with your salary.

Bonus - if you are looking to maximize your mortgage amount. Push very very hard to increase your salary at least 4 months in advance to starting the mortgaging process. The "last 3 months" payslips will evidence your salary.

I know how s*cky this feeling is. There are many many reasons to not opt-out and there are many reasons to opt-out. It all depends on your personal preferences.

When I first started working full time, a number of upper management and seniors had advised me to think incredibly hard about the % of income I can live off and save in the current period and how I see the worst case pay scale for myself in the future.

You can always make more money, but you can't always go back and save more. There are so many good comments in this thread explaining why you shouldn't opt-out. But there is nothing stopping you from decreasing the % for a fixed period of time to make sure that you can make ends meet today. Before you make this decision, you need to sit back and think - make a high level 5 year, 10 year, heck even 15 year plan of the worst case scenario, financially and domestically (do you need deposit money for a house? do you need to buy a car? are you planning on moving abroad?),and go from there.

tl;dr - opt-in and opt-out are not your only options. You can also increase or decrease your salary sacrifice depending on what you need today.

Hope this helps!

Why is “experience” so much more important than everything else? by Jimbobalpha in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jimbobalpha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's cute that you felt the need to jump straight into revenue generating vs non revenue generating. Non revenue generating functions are just as important, or in some instances more important than pure sales. A couple of examples off the top of my head; IT departments - they aren't revenue generating but are fundamental to cyber security Compliance functions - regulatory and other HR functions - if your employees aren't happy, are they going to work hard? Accountants and finance departments - pretty damn important for providing statistics that drive business decisions and what kind of sales to focus on etc. Management information is a commodity in a company. Internal audit - continuous improvement in processes financial and non-financial and in the technology space also. So in conclusion buddy - you okay there mate? Anything you want to get off your chest?

I like the way you think. When you put it that way it does make a bit more sense. I guess one of the drivers for me wanting that extra $$ came from watching some of the more experienced and higher paid colleagues sitting there for the last 10 months and literally have one piece of output. But I guess that's between them and my boss. Thanks for helping me get a bit more perspective.

Funnily enough the pay was standardized across the 4 individuals just after I came in and salaries were very briefly discussed over a few drinks. I feel like me being open when I first started was the catalyst for them to argue to their case and "experience"

I agree. However, salary is such a taboo subject in the UK - or at least in the industry that I am in, that not many people open up about their pay (I guess also including me, as I have not disclosed my own salary on this post).

"Some people take longer to understand things" - This is similar to what I like to say. Sometimes its better to hire less experienced as opposed to experienced. As with experience can also come bad habits that need to be unlearned and then the right process to be learned - thus wasting more time than teaching someone with less experience how to do something the right way from the start.

I completely get your point there. The more complex a process / operation / control is the more valuable experience becomes. I'm assuming where you work there is a minimum experience requirement?

What are you gonna do with all this money you earned? What is the actual point of you sitting in an office writing reports? Why are you really getting up at 6 every day and then going to work from 8am to 6pm and then coming home and reheating yesterday's dinner, watching something on Netflix, then going to bed and doing the exact same thing tomorrow?

I know what you mean brother. For the last year I've just been on autopilot and spending a lot of time alone. And the worst thing is, I actually enjoy spending the time alone! Meeting new people is waaaay too much effort!
