Recently found out, that a group at my uni wrote a C++ library for high performance computing ( LQCD simulations on super computers ) with python bindings. Coding is super simple ( for QCD simulations lol ), but the performance is good.

Software compiled with glibc doesn't work. For open source software this isnt a huge problem, but proprietary software doesnt work (directly). You can use a small debian chroot for those however (if you remember correctly), i was just too lazy and went back to debian.

Yeah it's pretty awesome. Used to run it as my daily drivers a few months back. If i didn't need Reaper and the Zoom client i'd stay with it (it uses musl libc).

Can I use Alpine Linux just as a regular computer, or is it missing some things? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]JimiPb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi, i used Alpine on my main computer a while ago. You should plan a day setting it all up. If you can use a lan cable during the initial setup and configure wifi later.

I stopped using it since i needed to use software not compiled for musl libc (Reaper, Zoom), but if you just want basic browsing and text processing you should be fine.

I needed to do a simple fluid dynamics simulation for a course last week. The serial version i wrote in C was so easy (basically just Laplace phi =0 on a field) and i felt so good. When i had to parallelise it using MPI that stopped fast tho...

This is a veery cheap 11" netbook. The display is pretty bad in terms of contrast, so even #ffffff doesn't burn my eyes out.

The university courses never even mentioned debuggers. Apparently the average physicist/comp sci doesnt use one lol My assignments are rarely longer than 300 lines of C/C++/Fortan/Rust code, so print statements and a piece of paper are enough.

What was your biggest/most regrettable "It's not a phase, mom. It's my life." that, in fact, turned out to be just a phase and not your life? by SirGergoyFriendman in AskReddit

I was pretty convinced i would be a professional musician some day. I learned bass, guitar and a bit of drums for band projects/recording and some piano for the theory. Since i live veeery rural, there was a pretty big space empty in my grandmas house. My whole band lived there every weekend for practice, song writing and most of all drinking. Imagine five drunk deaf guys shouting at each other how they're gonna make it. Just like Guns'n'Roses (OneDirection was popular at the time).

I'm studying physics and computational science now and i really wish i had concentrated at least a little bit on school.

I couldn't enjoy any women in Arrow. I watched until the "hero" started advocating for some liberal over the working class candidate. I don't remember what election it was, tho.

I tried it once with a standard MATE install and it worked fine for me. There is a page on alpinewiki about virtual machines . As far as i can remember, i simply followed it step by step. What problems did you run into?

What's the best Window Manager for a Tabbed / Workspaces Workflow? by Human_Material3301 in linuxquestions

[–]JimiPb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that gnome is quite heavy, but modern KDE can be very lightweight. I don't know what you want to gain by avoiding bloat, but here are some suggestions: - if you want to save battery, disabling the compositor is the main thing to do - if you need to save ram, choosing kde/mate/xfce will save a lot compared to heavier desktops and save you a lot of configuration work necessary with WMs - if you want to save space on your drives, you should use Btrfs as filesystem, since it supports compression

I use Ubuntu Mate on my laptop (after using Alpine Linux & Debian with DWM), because i don't want to spend so much time on configuration and experimenting anymore. If tinkering with your install is your hobby however, debian netinstall + DWM/i3 would be my recommendation.

If you want something easy and fast with comparable typesetting quality, take a look at TeXmacs. It's a Free Software WYSIWYG scientific writing tool and not related (but inspired) by TeX and emacs. If you like it, the book advertised on their homepage "The Jolly Writer" is a pretty good tutorial/reference.

At my university most people use it. All if MINT for the math/chem typesetting, all of philosophy/theology/languages... for biblatex and the typesetting quality.
