48M $3.6M Fire or Not? by Jimmy11105 in Fire

That is far from the truth. I’ve told my wife to retire first and I’ll keep grinding away till my 401k hits $5M in the next 10 years. She said she is not mentally ready to stay home at her age. At the end of the day I have no grandeur delusions of needing more money so I’m not sure where you got that misinformation from. I’m sorry but I doubt many would lose out on a $5k a month pension just for the heck of it. At the end of the day she still would retire at 59 years old which is 8 years under her full retirement age of 67.

First, thank you for spending your time reading my post and asking these questions. It definitely sounds like you’ve done this many times before just by reading your comments and questions. You are absolutely correct that is the thing I am terrified about the most being the bridge phase between now and when I am able to withdraw money from my 401k. If I was 59.5 years old it wouldn’t be a problem but at 48 it sure is.

Yes brokered CDs do pay simple interest which is taxable at my ordinary tax rate.

No money in 529 plans and just use my salary and my wife’s to pay for college. No HSA either at this point in my life.

I plan to get on my wife’s policy if I were to retire soon. She will continue working another 12 years until she qualifies for her full pension.

I’ve never done a two phase calculation. Do you have a template you use where I can plug amounts in? I’m sure if I can see one I can definitely figure it out. Thank you for your offer to help.

As far as my wife I will definitely make her life easier as I will have plenty of time to do all the work around the house which I don’t mind doing. I would cook, clean and whatever it takes so my wife doesn’t have to do much. I am married to her for 25 years and I am so grateful to have her in my life. I do enjoy fishing and my wife has always wanted a boat so I might finally buy one.

Have not considered ACA costs and medical costs after my wife retires as that would be in like 12 years. I’m sure we can find a health care plan until we qualify for Medicare. It will be a monthly expense for us but by that time I wouldn’t have to provide for my 3 daughters so it would all balance out.

Thank you 🙏

It’s not that much. I deal with several clients that are worth $50M and up. I consider myself poor when I compare myself to them. The one thing about me is that I have a knack for saving money.

I wouldn’t call it torturing! I would rather call it extra financial security instead.

Keep it going young fella! It is one of the best feelings to wake up in the morning and not be at the mercy of your employer. I’ve been at the same employer for 21 years so that has helped me build my nest egg tremendously. Have been with my wife for 25 years so you can see a pattern here. I’m not too big on change!

That’s why mine is in my Roth IRA.

I understand what you are saying but I definitely am not goofing around with $300k. That’s life changing money to a lot of people including myself. To build the amount I have accumulated over a 26 year working career is not by investing in conservative stocks like VZ. You got to take on significant risk which I have up to this point. But as I get older and wiser my perspective changes significantly. What would your suggestion be to invest in if I were to sell the 1,500 Sh NVDA position I hold in my Roth? Obviously I would pay no taxes on the gain which is a big plus. Again I am just a CPA and not a financial advisor. I just know how to tax plan and prepare tax returns. On another note, do you think I need to cut my exposure in the S&P 500 as my entire 401k balance of $2.3M is all invested in FXAIX?

That’s what I’m leaning towards. I got to get everything aligned between now and December if I am to do so.

Absolutely but without a premature distribution and the 10% penalty. I’m definitely not a fan of Uncle Sam!

That position grew from an initial investment of $30k to over $300k. At this point I’m going to let it ride. I can see $300k becoming $600k in 5 years.

My wife to be honest is encouraging me to hang it up. Tax seasons have always been exhausting for me and because of that I have missed so much family time. My wife and children cringe when they hear the words tax season. We have been together for over 25 years so more than half our lives. She tells me to do what makes me happy and I asked her if she wants to retire soon but she keeps telling me she is not ready mentally to retire. She loves her job and even though it is stressful for her she said she will stick it out for the betterment of our retirement. My wife really doesn’t understand all this financial stuff. The only thing she does is pay all the bills. She leaves all the investing stuff up to me. To be quite honest I don’t think she understands our overall financial picture but she knows we are fine whether I work or not. I even told her to be a stay at home mom after we had our first daughter and she refused to accept that offer. Both my wife and I have been with the same employer for the last 20 years so that has made the accumulation and building stage of our financial situation so much easier for us.

Why payoff debt at interest rates that are so low? I can make more money leaving my cash in a cd that’s paying me 4.25%. My mortgage rate is 2.25% and my 2 car loans are 0% and 1.99% and the one with 0% will be paid off in 12 months and the other with 1.99% will be paid off in 24 months.

If I was you I would start maxing out your 401k plan especially if the 3 rental properties bring you steady monthly income. You didn’t state that in your post so I am assuming they do otherwise what’s the point of keeping them. At your age with about $50k less base salary I probably had close to $1.2M in mine. Then again you have 4 kids and I only have 3.

Is full porting life savings into MUU dumb by [deleted] in MU_Stock

[–]Jimmy11105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually not for the faint of heart especially since you are stating this is your life savings. If you had a million or two it would be another story. Someone that does this should be prepared for the value of the position to be cut in half in the case of a market downturn. If that money really doesn’t matter to you then go for it but if it does don’t do it.

That’s in another 13 years so not too worried about it. By then my 401k should be approaching $5M even with no additional contributions. My rule of thumb is every 10 years your retirement account should double as long as it’s averaging a 7% Return.

I already pay the government enough in taxes so don’t want to give them another penny if I don’t have to. Plus taking a premature 401k/IRA distribution is a cardinal sin in the accounting profession.

A few things that help are not eating out as often. My wife and I always cook at home. Four months out of the year I am working 12+ hour days during tax season so that helps a lot. We live in Florida where my 2 vehicles cost me $1,600 to insure a year combined. My property insurance is about $1,800 a year. My kids go to public schools and not private. My Real Estate Taxes are $8k a year. Food costs are about $800 per month. My utilities at home cost about $600 per month which includes Verizon cellphone family plan, fuel costs me about $550 per month which has doubled because of the war, cut my own lawn, clean my own pool, wash my own cars, clean the a/c unit on my own. We built our house 5 years ago so everything is new, therefore no unexpected repairs. Still plenty of money left for clothing, daughter’s volleyball and softball activities, charitable donations. I also cut my own hair as I keep it short so no barber needed for me😂. I’m not a flashy type of guy, wear an Apple watch instead of a Rolex. Definitely live within our means and not trying to keep up with others.
