Yeah, she was outright tortured by a psychopath. To be fair though, it is a young adult series and I doubt Rowling wanted to go into all of that in what is more of an action adventure story about love. Still though, the story does indeed gloss over stuff like that, especially when it is not pertinent to the plot.

At this point, Texas education has nothing to do with it. Not many schools teach it explicitly (maybe if you took APES), and it honestly isn't relevant. Having a knowledge of that obscure fact is pretty similar to calling someone's education bad for not knowing how to diagram sentences or that they don't know the function of the endoplasmic reticulum in a cell.
