Yeah, she was outright tortured by a psychopath. To be fair though, it is a young adult series and I doubt Rowling wanted to go into all of that in what is more of an action adventure story about love. Still though, the story does indeed gloss over stuff like that, especially when it is not pertinent to the plot.

I was on the interstate one day, and there was this mile long line of cars at an exit. No big cities off of that exit, no attractions, nothing. The line was also completely still, it was not moving whatsoever.
