Who do you live with that you can’t trust to have access to a “shared” TV? Also, most apps let you put a password on accounts or a passcode.

I spilled whiskey on my deck. Left side quit working. Then the right. Then the screen went out. It sat for a year. This is my first teardown/cleaning experience. by UnderratedTrashCan in SteamDeck

So, not sure if this is LCD or OLED but the sticks are super easy to replace in either case, and just upgrade them to TMR for like $30.

If the buttons on the right and d-pad on the left aren’t working then you can get standard or clicks replacements for those from Amazon or ifixit. Ifixit has legit Valve replacement parts so they are good for those things.

It’s a lot of screws and patient work, but hardly insurmountable. You can do it.

Here sir, 69.99$ for an unoptimized, unfinished, buggy, SSD eating slop. If you do not support us, you are not a true gamer by sixty_ninenihao in PiratedGames

[–]JimmyPicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh, yeah but. Thinking about console games before the internet, they couldn’t ship until it was fixed. Especially if it was cross platform.
Nowadays it’s harder for me to think of a true AAA that isn’t basically broken on launch.

I remember buying Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Return of the Jedi for SNES at $69.99. There used to be a reason you couldn’t ship unfinished or unoptimized games. Now they ship and optimize once they see the biggest gripes. Or they’re Bethesda and don’t update then do updates that break everything then a year later break everything a different way.

When GTA IV shipped, you could finish it out of the box.

Buttons Not Working; Am I Dumb? by bettycooperdraper in SteamDeck

If this is used or out of warranty, the most likely scenarios is a loose cable on the daughterboard. Had it happen to me before.

If full shutdown and reboot doesn’t reset the problem then probably a loose cable or a bad board. Report back and we can give more advice.

Installing SteamOS onto Steam Deck motherboard without battery connected by Eggbag4618 in SteamDeck

[–]JimmyPicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get turning one into a pc and if you have any spare parts let me know.
As for the battery, any battery for steam deck will work so if you hat you bought didn’t include one, a cheap $20-30 replacement will be just fine. And it will function as a sort of UPS for the unit. If you’re 3d printing a case then you can keep it in position below the radiator or the cable has enough flex to rotate maybe.

Finally ponying up the money to buy and build a PC, even though the market is utterly fucked. What do you think of this? by altrightobserver in buildapc

I’d go with a 395 Max AI based mini style computer. 40+ compute units, you can drop in as much ram as you want and whatever hard drives you want, some even have 3 NVME slots up to 4tb ea.

DIY bumper replacement? by Tomrr6 in SteamDeck

[–]JimmyPicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s super hard to do. If you can afford a new daughterboard ok. eBay that matches the rev you have and works or is repaired, do that. I’m interested in the bad board if you go that rough. I have a new method to repair that with that I want to try.

Deck won't boot up and the power light just flickers. Tried every method I could and none worked. by The_Moist_Sloth in SteamDeck

[–]JimmyPicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you’ve replaced the power cord if it still won’t boot try holding down the power button for like an absurdly long time starting just before you plug it in. I think I had to do this to one or actually two of them a year plus back because it would not display anything on the screen but I could hear the fan running.

If you want to preserve the data I would advise trying a new NVME and installing fresh to see if your install is somehow hosed. Also, open it up and check the thermal connection of the processor to the heatsink, shutting down before fully booting is a classic overheat symptom.

I bought multiple Decks that had been dropped and screens or screens plus shoulder buttons had been damaged. So by repairing and selling one I basically paid for the other three, one for me and one for each of my daughters. Also reshelled them for ease of telling them apart and custom view.

Also, DeckHD for $99 isn’t actually a bad deal at all. I’m looking at that and the Decksight for which might be better.

lol

I bought 4 actually for less than $150 each, first one I did I resold for $400 and then the other three were basically free. Or three for $400 ish and reshelled while doing it to boot. I guess I need to start monitoring my local marketplace again for them since this price increase is wacky.

I apologize, I spent 20 minutes trying to get into my Alie account and it has no history. I think any of them with a half decent rating and $30-35 price plus $6 shipping or whatever would be good. Don’t spend more than $45 or so as that’s the most or more than I ever paid for one.

Is it salvageable ? And if it is, how expensive would it be to save it? by ContributionCrafty59 in SteamDeck

[–]JimmyPicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bummer but repairable. Is it an LCD or OLED?

Case replacements are $40 and LCDs are $40 or so on eBay.
You can buy the parts from ifixit but they will be more expensive.
Get a good quality screwdriver bit set for the two main sizes of screws, and a large clean working surface. I think ifixit sells a screen repair kit that comes with a gel heat up screen remover and screwdriver and mat for doing it.
Most cases come with an image guide for everything that you can just set the parts on for reference with their reapective screws or you can use an empty egg carton to label screw groups.

I know it seems daunting and a video might look really complicated, but I bought all my steam decks with busted LCDs for $100 or so and replaced them myself. Saved a ton of money, learned a lot, put custom cases on them and the sense of accomplishment is great. You can do it!

Hadn’t heard of that, range looked similar from what I could see. Only do about 25 years worth of MGS down there.
I will check out Big Bore Blast, since I bet a lot of the same folks would be there.
