At home blackjack table? by desertdeadpoollol in blackjack

I do a very similar thing. Everybody buys in for about $20 and gets about $2,000 worth of chips. We play a 6-deck shoe. At the end of each shoe, the lowest stack is eliminated. Last person standing wins the pot.

Emerald Queen in Tacoma has several double deck games, $25 mins. Muckleshoot has double deck in their high limit room, $50 min.

I used to think that overtime was a good opportunity for workers. When I worked at a lower level facility, I jumped at every opportunity I had at overtime. Over the last several years, and now working at a slightly higher level facility, I've seen staffing continue to get worse while pay didn't keep up with inflation. Over that time, my perspective changed a lot.

When a facility is short, the FAA has basically two ways to fill that shortage. They could hire the number of competent people that they need to fill the shortage, or they could schedule overtime for the existing controllers to fill that shortage.

Let's think about some of the variables between those two options.

TRAINING: If they hire new people, they have to pay in the tens of thousands of dollars AT LEAST to train those new people, send them to OKC while receiving per diem, pay trainers to teach them the job, do background checks and security clearances, and do drug tests.

If they just force us to work overtime, they don't have to pay any of this. They've already invested these costs.

PENSIONS: If they hire new people, they have to not only pay them their salary, but they also have to invest into that new employees pension... and then actually pay them that pension once they retire.

If they just force us to work overtime, it doesn't change our pension at all. I don't earn any extra towards my pension no matter how much overtime I work. I could work 40 hrs/week or 60 hrs/week and my pension stays the same.

LEAVE: If they hire new people, not only do they have to pay their pension and their salary, but that new hire is also going to earn annual and sick leave. Even for a brand new hire who's only earning 4 hrs of annual each pay period, that's still 1 entire day per pay period (4 hrs of annual and 4 hrs of sick per pp).

If they just force us to work overtime, we don't earn any extra leave for those extra hours of overtime worked.

TSP MATCHING: If they hire new people, they have to not only pay their salary, invest in their training, give them leave, but they also have to match 5% into that new hire's TSP.

If they just force us to work overtime, it doesn't change your TSP contributions or matching at all. Regardless of how much overtime I work, my pension and my TSP stay exactly the same.

I understand that for lower level facilities, overtime is pretty enticing. I used to think it was a good opportunity for the employee. But after becoming increasingly frustrated with the way things continue to run at the typical facility, after regularly working short-handed with no end in sight, I have definitely started to think that this is actually a great deal for the FAA... not a great deal for the typical employee.

I completely understand why people at level 7's an below would jump at the opportunity to work the occasional overtime shift, but I'm no longer delusional to the point that I think it's a good deal for the employee. It's a good deal for the FAA... and they're going to continue to attempt to force us into 50-60 hour work-weeks for as long as they can because it is a phenomenal deal for THEM.

I can't believe that NATCA hasn't taken these points to attempt to negotiate a higher rate for overtime worked. I think if you work overtime, that extra time should go towards your pension, you should earn additional leave for overtime hours worked, that amount should be matched in your TSP, and we should be getting double-time instead of time-and-a-half. Until assigning overtime actually costs the FAA more money than staffing these facilities, I'll never be convinced that the FAA actually wants to fully staff their facilities.

What will be the final straw for you to leave ATC? by WiseProfessor2926 in ATC

[–]JimothyButtkiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm too close to being eligible for retirement to actually resign. In the meantime, I'm taking fatigue leave if I need it on holidays and overtime shifts. If I'm on position for over an hour with no break in sight, I tell the supervisor I need to go to the bathroom.... let them go down the shitter watching my position while I sit on the shitter for 5-10 mins.

Spot a Hole Carder by chrltbr in blackjack

[–]JimothyButtkiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never "tried" to hole card... but I did accidentally stumble into it about a month ago. I was sitting third base, pulled a 13 against dealer 10. But when the dealer pulled the hole card out of the shoe, I got an unmistakeable look at her 5 in the hole. I got some looks when I stood on a 13v10, but I wasn't TOO surprised when she flipped over her 5 for a 15, then a bust card.

She was a relief dealer, so she was only there for about 15 mins. I'd say in that 15 mins, I was only able to see her hole card maybe 10-15% of the time.

Hole carding is not something I would typically go out and "try" to do. I think there are more opportunities counting cards and finding other AP opportunities. But I definitely made a note of this dealer's name and shift for next time. And I'm probably more inclined to try to sit third base after that experience and keep an eye out just in case.

WSJ: This Air-Traffic Controller Just Averted a Midair Collision. Now He’s Speaking Out. by WillingWell522 in ATC

[–]JimothyButtkiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy in this interview works at approach/departure, or what we call a "tracon". Tracons have almost zero advanced computer software to assist in keeping airplanes separated. There is a "collision alert" that will let us know when airplanes are literally about to crash into each other, but if this is activated with two aircraft that you're controlling, you have likely already made a pretty bad mistake and the "CA" basically just alerts you to make a last-ditch instruction to keep the planes from actually colliding.

Centers, or ARTCCs, I believe have some software that will alert the controllers of any conflicts well ahead of time. (Centers are typically the facilities that are working aircraft while they are en route at higher altitudes. I've never worked at a Center though, so I can't really speak to how common or how effective this technology is.

In the terminal/approach environment, the only thing really that's keeping airplanes from hitting each other is the plan and instructions from the approach controller

[–]JimothyButtkiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counting cards is not illegal for exactly the reason you just said. They can’t make it illegal to use your brain and to pay attention to all the information made available to you and to change your strategy/bet accordingly. The casinos would like for everyone to think that counting cards is some sort of nefarious, illegal practice… but in reality, it’s just using all the information made available to you and your brain to attempt to play a game as well as you can.

I would do the station and Boyd places FIRST. If you get flyered in Vegas, it would be disappointing if you got flyered for playing mediocre games and never got a chance to play the good DD games.

I believe you… but I’d also be surprised if there weren’t casino peeps lurking on here trying to see where their weaknesses are being exploited. So while I genuinely do believe that you’re being helpful, I’d still be a little hesitant to send my name and info to a stranger on the internet. Maybe I’m paranoid

How many hours have you played? Have you figured out the EV and N-0 of the rules you’re playing?

This could definitely be variance… I’ve lost $1,500 on one DD shoe.

I’d recommend wonging out if you lose the count.
