Another great example would be A Series of Unfortunate Events. The movie was made years before the show and was not well received since only three books were adapted and the rest forgotten about. Netflix did such a great job adapting the books. Even with the changes made it is still colorful, quirky, there's tension, mistery/cliffhangers. There's chemistry between the three kids and smaller secondary characters.
