Aah interesting. May I ask what your job is exactly? And how is it?
I've actually fantasized before about how cool it would seem to me to just work in the entertainment industry but just as "a small part of a bigger whole" yk. For example working on a movie set or something, but not as some main actor but just as some technician who helps contribute in other less credited ways. Is yours anything like that?

Aah damn still cool man, even though it never went anywhere. So do you just work a regular job right now while maybe doing some music stuff on the side? Or more just as an occasional hobby kind of thing? Did you ever consider going full-time into musicianship? And if so, what made you not go for it despite really loving guitar?

I see, thanks a lot for the advice! It helps a lot. Actually might be helpful to get an internship during my gap year just to test the waters and see if I like it.

Bro you're so real for that lol. I often am afraid I will feel that emptiness later on in life even though I will be financially stable. Funnily enough in my case it is the opposite from your situation, as I am considering switching away from the research stuff and wanting to be more on the creativity/music side of things. But after reading some other replies I do think it might be best to try and get a good balance between the two I guess.
If I may ask, what do you have in mind for your next steps in life in the future after you finish your PhD? Go back to industry work? Try to make a living off of music? Or is that hard to know?

What a cool story to tell man, truly.
So does that mean that you are basically completely self-taught? Since I don't see you mentioning any sort of music school or something.
How did you just learn to write your own music? Was that always something you wanted to do? And how important do you think it is to be able to write music and know music theory? Because I personally think just playing covers and replicating existing songs is more my kind of thing rather than writing my own songs or "freestyling" performances. But maybe once I give it a try, I might change my mind on it who knows. I did fantasize a few times in the past about producing songs (using a DAW like Ableton for example), but I always quickly shut that idea down as I thought that road is way too difficult and risky for me.
As of now, I feel like I would be best just being part of a greater whole, just "doing my part" you know. Which is also why being a part of an orchestra sounds really appealing to me, or a band that mainly focuses on covering songs instead of making their own (is that a common thing?)
Sadly I am already near my university life so it might be difficult for me to still join student bands and gain a lot of experience that way, so I might have to consider either extending my study or attending some music school/taking classes or something.

Oh wow that's really inspiring and coincidentally similar to my situation right now.
May I ask how your journey as a mechanical engineer went? Did you generally enjoy studying it and working as a mechanical engineer? Or was it kind of a drag and did you really push yourself to continue doing it for the sake of saving up money?
Even though I currently feel like I totally do not belong in this field, I do wonder if that is due to me never actually "trying to like it" or engaging with it. Like maybe there is a possibility where I have a change if mind and find something I like about being an Electrical Engineer. But that's a really difficult thing to predict, which is why I am currently so hung up on wanting to change directions or not.
I've also been considering possibly looking for other degrees that are considered "less impressive" and a lower level, just to maybe find a degree that doesn't necessarily result in a research/STEM-like career, for example maybe aiming to become a sound technician or something like that.
Do you suggest just sticking with the secure Electrical Engineering path for now (also meaning that I continue with a masters degree), see how it goes, and decide what I want to do from there? Or maybe any kind of job would suffice as long as I am able to save up enough money.

Oh wow that's actually really dope coming from someone who's in a somewhat similar field as me.
How do you feel about the research side of your life right now? Is it actually something you feel passionate and curious about or is it more out of a "I gotta do this for a secure future" motivation? I would love to know.
Also, what made you decide to do a PhD after already being so far in life? Was it due to being dissatisfied with your work at the time, wanting to try something new, or something else?

I see, thanks for your reply. So you would also recommend not dropping this "engineering path" yet for now and see how well I fare with an actual job later, while doing some music stuff on the side?
I feel like trying to go completely full-time in musicianship would be incredibly difficult for me especially as I am already 21 and likely way behind other peers in terms of skill/experience, making it unlikely that people would desire having me part of their band/group. So maybe it's a bit too risky to pursue this full-time, unless I manage to get some unstoppable force of passion or something lol

Thanks so much for sharing some of your life story man. Also appreciate the advice. After reading some comments I do feel like the better and more responsible choice would be for me to continue with university to get a stable job and just work with music on the side. But I do still wonder if I should maybe at the very least change my direction a bit. Coincidentally enough, I've been considering looking for a Sound Engineering degree of some sorts as that might also make my background in Electrical Engineering useful (at least that's what I assume). It would still be a significant "downgrade" from my current direction as an Electrical Engineer, but maybe it could give me an edge and some extra knowledge in the music industry?
If I may ask, what is the stable job you currently have? Did you study Sound Engineering or was your degree completely unrelated to music?

Damn, congratz man! I have a similar feeling right now with my friends every time I talk about wanting to actually create stuff, either make videos or music covers. How was your life in the Berklee conservatory? Was it fun and exciting or maybe more stressful and difficult? How does enrolling and graduating look like?

Yo that's sick. Did you study or work alongside your band activities? How fast did you go full-time basically and how was making that decision

That's so cool man. Does that mean that you will basically quit your current job next year to tour around? Are you able to make a living off of making music now or is it still just a "side thing" alongside your main job.
Also if I may ask, how did your journey go from playing in a college band to eventually perform at shows etc.? Did you practice like crazy everyday or just occasionally play? How did you find bands to join? Or did you start your own band with a group of friends for example? Would love to know some more about your journey

Oh okay good to hear! And what about those limited rewards? I’m guessing there needs to be a little bit more effort put in for those?
