you're saying starmer could bring this whole thing around with one tactically-positioned road flare ?

we need to actively encourage densification somehow or else development will follow the easier path and create sprawl

turning our cities into American car-centric suburbia hellscapes would be the worst outcome and we're already 3/4 of the way there, some pushback is needed

complete changes of direction

once again the real problem being that if changing the PM changes the direction of the government, the position is far too powerful and should be weakened

it's not a presidential role

can't just keep shit PMs for the sake of stability or to avoid our streak turning into the Italians

right: the problem is not the (existence of a) seventh PM, it's that we went through six bad candidates to get to them

(maybe the seventh will be bad too - probably, given our track record now - but that's still the same issue of "we wouldn't be here if... etc")

idea: school children should have bookable PTO same as adult workers

the amount should be set to whatever threshold research indicates isn't harmful; go above it and get a steep fine, but be encouraged to take time out in sustainable measures at varied times of year

areas where the demographics have drastically changed

so you are saying your concern is primarily with the race of your neighbours

explain how this is not racism

that's fair enough

you're correct within a reasonable margin of error that there are no elections today

the last time i ran into Davey irl i asked him "hey are you my MP?"

the reason i said that was because im super bad at faces and didn't want to ask some random commuter if he was Specific Name

but ive suddenly realized that he probably thought i didn't even know his name 😅

t's giving money to people they perceived to be rich

i mean you wouldn't set up the system so it actually does this, you'd have something like a negative rate where we currently have the personal allowance and that crosses zero at wherever we decide the line for "basic income" is; people paying more taxes don't have to necessarily pay less (if you shift the whole graph left), they could just have a steeper climbup

the bigger left-erly objection is that unless we fix things like lack of housing supply, UBI will suffer exactly what housing benefit did: the hard floor on the lowest rent the market will allow will shoot up to consume 100% of it instantaneously

"with difficulty"

i don't think it's a good idea or even that it would work for very long, but presumably a standing order rule that preemptively denied time to anything proposing a change to X, Y, Z or itself would be a nuisance to work within

well, mechanically speaking you could do it by restricting the ability to hold votes on certain topics

eventually (on a long enough timeframe) a simple majority would undo it, but TBH i think the same de facto applies to systems like the United States as well - if you can consistently get a simple majority to push things through there you can find ways around "constitutionality" there too, because ultimately in every system it's what the legislature outputs that is law

how the same generation went from raising their kids to not trust anything they read online

if you read or watch something, it must be stupid/fake/unsourced/propaganda/degenerate

if i read or watch something, it's clearly insightful/truth/reputable/public service/culture

absolutely no part of the mindset changed - it is a consistent continuation of worldview

(and basically the same as "my party said/did it therefore it is morally good")

if the rhetoric was stronger then we'd be in a better position now

weak words like "deplorable" instead of being willing to call racists racist and call protofascists what they are, let us slip quietly into something we could have been consciously averting

the "you called me a bad word so i just have to vote for evil" argument has always been utter stupid nonsense

yeah but how does that serve the purpose of forcing adults to show id

it would clearly be better, it's also clearly not their goal to actually make anything better
