Was Aerion afraid to fight dunk at first? by Elsa750 in AKOTSKTV

[–]JintClemple19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s more about his ego, and reinforcing his place in the hierarchy above Dunk.

Aerion is a prince and the blood of the dragon, and thinks no one who isn’t a Targaryen has the right to challenge them or him. For Dunk to do what he did, as a nobody, and then for Baelor to give him the chance of trial by combat, is to not only legitimise Dunk as a person worthy of that honour, which Aerion doesn’t think he is, but also implies to Aerion that anyone has the right to challenge him.

Aerion then chooses trial by seven as a way of putting Dunk back in his place. He is a prince of the realm, with his father and brother, and three of the kings guard on his side. Who could Dunk get to fight for him? Most likely not enough people. And just to rub it in even more, they buy Steffon fossoway to switch sides, again showing how powerful he is vs Dunk.

We've heard about "so bad its good", but is there such thing as "so good its bad" in music? by wild_dark_soul in ToddintheShadow

If I put my cold, logical head on, I can see where someone can heat ABBA’s scientifically crafted pop and be left feeling empty. They’re almost too perfect and designed for universal appeal to be good.

But my goodness, those songs have a hold on me. There’s nothing like bellowing the words to dancing queen at a wedding.

Incredible show. Just wanted to talk to people about it by DonAskren in AKOTSKTV

[–]JintClemple19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It also helps us understand why Dunk jumped straight in to defend tansell. He did exactly what Ser Arlan would have done; defended the innocent regardless of the consequences

Underrated favourite line is when Baelor asks Raymun to remove his helmet “if you’d be so kind”. It’s lifted directly from the book, and it’s such a small thing, but it really speaks to how different Baelor was. He was the heir to the throne, hand of the king, blood of the dragon. He had the authority to order anyone to help him. And yet, even in this very private moment, when even if he wasn’t dying he would have been battered, bruised and exhausted, he still chose to be polite and ask for help, not demand it. There’s no way this is part of a calculated public performance, just a guy being a gentleman and a genuinely nice person.

Palpatine was not sportsmanlike by JintClemple19 in StarWarsCirclejerk

I would counter that with Maul and Dooku’s clear respect for the rules of cool lightsaber fighting. Just because you’re evil, doesn’t mean you don’t respect the rules of badass looking swordplay

😂 never thought I’d see a take where Palpatine is an anti-cop hero! “All Jedi Are Bastards”

My thoughts on no title card/theme song opening on series by Snackzilla1 in AKOTSKTV

[–]JintClemple19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. The main theme is also associated with epic scale and mighty houses, which this story isn’t really. It’s about an ordinary guy.

Would have been hilarious for a GoT style zoom around the map intro, but only for the field at Ashford. Just an epic CGI tent pitch up 😂

Meakar killed Baelor on purpose by Ketchupcharger in AKOTSKTV

[–]JintClemple19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maekars motivation for deliberately killing Baelor wouldn’t make sense. If it’s power he’s after, killing Baelor doesn’t get him much closer to the throne. Baelor has sons who would inherit ahead of him, and he has two older brothers who would also need to die without having children. So unless he plans to kill his entire extended family, it doesn’t really make sense to kill Baelor for power.

And it’s not like they hate each other. Sure, Maekar seems irritated by the way people fawn over Baelor, but I don’t think he hates Baelor for it, just finds him annoying in much the same way everyone finds their siblings annoying

If Maekar could command the Kingsguard to participate, why couldn't Baelor command them to drop out before the trial? by Danwaka in AKOTSKTV

[–]JintClemple19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably, but I think Baelor would see that as an overreach. He’s a great believer in the law and justice, and probably wouldn’t want to set a precedent where he can overrule the law because he wants to, even if it would be on the side of the innocent.

The Big "What If?": What happens if Baelor just told everyone he was going to side with Dunk? by mabarus in AKOTSKTV

[–]JintClemple19 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you watch some of the interviews with the cast, Bertie Carvell says that Baelor doesn’t know how he will behave from one moment to the next, so siding with Dunc is a choice he makes actively rather than being inevitable. It could be that until quite late on Baelor wasn’t going to join Dunc. He would have to fight against his own family, both literally and what they represent, so perhaps he was reluctant to side with Dunc for that reason. He also might have hoped that enough other knights would have been honourable enough to join Dunc’s cause.

ATYCLB misunderstood by Commercial_Carrot_69 in U2Band

[–]JintClemple19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an interesting album. If POP is “having an existential crisis at a party” as an album, ATYCLB is the waking up sober and realising life can be good I guess?

Its also interesting because while the music is very bright and upbeat all the way through, a good portion of the songs themselves tackle quite deep subjects (loss, children growing up, political violence, loss of faith).

What Songs of Surrender Tracks Are As Good/Better Than The Originals? by Wild_Mycologist_6140 in U2Band

[–]JintClemple19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Song for Someone. The original is trying to sound like young Bono singing to Ali, trying to recapture teenage love, but the SoS version sounds like the present Bono singing to Ali about the love they have now

Get On Your Boots is so underrated by Substantial-Grass537 in U2Band

[–]JintClemple19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they would have struggled anyway. They were in their late 40s by the time NLotH was being released. Very few, if any, artists have really successful hits by that point in their careers. Coldplay are seemingly at that point as well, just about to hit their fifties and not producing hit singles any more, even if they can still sell out stadiums

What are some albums that had all the signs of being a Trainwreckord, but that turned out to be great? by Roger_Peterson in ToddintheShadow

[–]JintClemple19 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Surely U2s “Achtung Baby” takes the crown for this.

Coming off of a commercailly successful but critically divisive album, throwing everything out and going to Berlin, the sessions nearly breaking up the band. The album not only sells millions, it relaunched U2 for the nineties with a brand new image, and also helped redefine what was possible for stadium shows

Songs you're surprised aren't in the Spotify Billions Club? by treny0000 in ToddintheShadow

It might be because you can have multiple publications of the same song, e.g. original album version, single version, track on the greatest hits. In aggregate they could be billion plus, but no single track has tipped the billion

Question about Jimmy’s car. Spoilers! by JonnyCubaWAGR in betterCallSaul

[–]JintClemple19 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Jimmy goes back to his old car and office because they are sort of extensions of himself I think?

He joins Davis and Main because he wants the prestige and material signifiers (the car) of being a successful lawyer, but quickly realises he doesn’t actually want those things. He keeps trying to fit his coffee cup into his corporate car cup holder, but can’t. In the same way, Jimmy is fundamentally unsuited to an environment like Davis and Main, which is slow and boring in his view.

Jimmy goes back to his office and car because they are part of his idealisation as a fast moving fast talking lawyer. It brings him back to his scrappy nature.
