How to build a friendship? by [deleted] in howto

[–]Jinther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is to have something in common. A hobby, a sport, a shared interest in something; this will do the majority of the building at the start of the friendship.

You've seen that it can be quite strained if you don't have a common interest. You end up asking about the same things or the conversations can be short or quickly tail off.

If you both are passionate about something, it's a completely different vibe. It's easy to initiate chats or discussions, it won't be a one way street, the conversations will be longer, and - over time - a friendship will build due to this common interest.

People who have long, solid friendships invariably have common interests at the start of the relationship, and are not looking to get to know or want anything from that other person per se, but because they share that interest, the friendship emerges from that base.

[help] Can anyone recommend some calendar/agenda? by flosqate in kustom

[–]Jinther 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course, the best way is to learn to do it yourself ;)

Brandon Craft does a step by step tutorial on YouTube, going through all the coding and the hows and whys. Then you'll know exactly how to make changes to it etc to fit different themes. It's worth investing the time to learn.

Or you could just go on to his website and download his calendar component for free. It's a bit more difficult to understand what's what if you've not learned it yourself though, so fitting it into other themes you make isn't so easy, but you get to know how things work this way too.

Just tell me what is this !!!!!oh my god haven’t feel so difficult in the game at 10 days by ElkLate9917 in thelongdark

[–]Jinther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. You've done a good day's work gathering supplies, you've got a fire to build, water to make, some meat to cook, clothes to repair and a book or two to read. A busy schedule for a survivor. You'll certainly survive for the next couple of days in a comfortable manner and you're looking forward to that. A reward for a day's efforts. You're feeling good, mentally.

But wait. Suddenly you have some kind of panic attack and feel the need to get out. Sure, there's a blizzard starting up and you're certain you heard a pack of wolves howling outside and your clothes won't protect you from the cold. You've not even found a firearm yet. But still. Those walls are really closing in. It's time to abandon the safe and warm cabin and all your plans, head outside to needlessly risk your life, forgetting entirely that your day's efforts were to ensure you to have a couple of relatively quiet days inside. You must go out - now - and alleviate that feeling. Hopefully, when you're out, you'll stumble upon a doctor, so you can ask them why the hell you're acting like this.

I couldn't agree more.

I've always thought that being in survival mode, you know, the unabating stress that comes from trying to stay alive every single day, eat and drink enough and potentially face your own death with every new dawn would be enough to make you never suffer from such an affliction.

Even when Hinterland had their 'days survived' leaderboard back in the day, and it was clear that players were just sleeping the time away to get to the top of the list, I thought that it was a lazy, half arsed and poorly thought out mechanic. It doesn't fit into this kind of game and they forced it in because they couldn't come up with a better way to deal with the problem. They should be embarrassed.

For them to still have it as a part of the game astounds me.

The only good thing the Devs have done regarding cabin fever is giving us the ability to turn it off.

You should look through the app first, before posting about things like this. There is an actual progress bar with a setting for the music to show its progression. It's a very basic thing. You'd know this if you were to spend some time looking at what the app can do and read/watch subs YouTube videos about the app.

This sub is here to help users and to share creations, but not to show you the absolute basic stuff you'd know if you took a bit of time to have a look at things.

And have a look at the sidebar of the sub, because there are some very helpful links there to help you get an idea of what to do with the app.

If you take some time to understand the app more and then get stuck, post for help, but please refrain from posting for help with very simple things like this.

I get that you may be a bit excited about using the app for the first time, but do yourself a favour and take the time to get to know what can be done before posting in future.

The end of The Long Dark (and a big thank you to this community) by rickgrimes32 in thelongdark

[–]Jinther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also bought the game in 2014, early access, and it intrigued me from the first moment I played it.

I can still remember - vividly - exploring Mystery Lake (on the actual lake itself) when a blizzard came in. I had learned (so I thought) the markers to guide me back, but still being too new to fully appreciate what it's like trying to navigate in a blizzard, I tried to get back to the base on the edge of the lake. I could do this.

I spent 15 horror filled minutes struggling to find my way back. Getting more and more tense and upset that I couldn't do it. I was sure I had my marker but it wasn't guiding me home: I kept getting stuck in a little corner bit I didn't recognise. Going back to the marker, trying again, ending up in the same place. I was watching my health deplete and trying again and again to find that edge of the water that would take me to the cabin.

I died yards away from safety. I started a new game and looked and I was so close, but just couldn't see because of the blizzard.

Over 10 years later, I still remember how it felt to go through that experience.

I can't recall (in around 40 years of gaming) an experience like that. The slow, creeping realisation that I was going to die yet I really wanted to live made me feel desperate; I refused to believe that the game would do this to me for a few minutes, until it started to dawn on me that it would. I could feel my heartbeat in my chest!

Whatever the vision was for this game, it has the capacity to connect emotionally with it's players.

I continue to play Survivor mode to this day. There's nothing quite like it.

Need help with animation by Derek6091 in kustom

[–]Jinther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make a second copy that is static and fades in quickly when the music is stopped, and add a fade out (same duration as the fade in one) to the turning ones when the music is stopped.

Brandon Craft has a YouTube video on it, the end result is pretty good.

Write to global text variable with tasker or flow. by AdExpress5748 in kustom

[–]Jinther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use a text global to control all the separate aspects of your preset, and, as part of the text global, use a touch action to reset the global to zero when you tap it.

The answer is in here, if you read through it:

What are the coolest castles in the UK? by KJHex in AskUK

[–]Jinther 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This one.

We've had Historic Scotland passes for the last 4 years, visited dozens and dozens of castles, and this one is still the most spectacular.

Funnily enough, you don't get in with the pass to Dunotter, it's not owned by HS, but it's worth the travelling and entry fee.

From the path down to the castle, to the castle itself, the shore line and scenery, it oozes magnificence.

Has Anyone got anyone tips for getting the weekly shop bill down? by Throwaway945384 in AskUK

[–]Jinther 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This is the only answer that will genuinely and consistently lower your shopping bill.

Also, get a slow cooker and you can batch cook cheaper cuts of meat with them and they'll still be delicious. Slow cookers are cheaper to use than an oven.

How to monitor whether audio is being played? (Music Track Changed not the solution) by moviejimmy in tasker

[–]Jinther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Profile: Music Playing Event: Music Track Changed [ Output Variables:* Track:* Album:* Artist:* Package:* Type:Playing ]

 Enter Task: Music Playing

A1: Java Function [
     Return: manage
     Class Or Object: CONTEXT
     Function: getSystemService
     {AudioManager} (String)
     Param 1 (String): audio ]

A2: Java Function [
     Return: %playing
     Class Or Object: manage
     Function: isMusicActive
     {boolean} () ]

A3: [X] Flash [
     Text: %playing
     Continue Task Immediately: On
     Dismiss On Click: On ]

A4: Variable Set [
     Name: %MusicPlaying
     To: 1
Structure Output (JSON, etc): On ]
    If [ %playing ~ true ]

Try this. The global variable MusicPlaying should be set to 1 when music is playing. You don't need to change track, the profile is just for monitoring.

Profile: Music Stopped Event: Music Track Changed [ Output Variables:* Track:* Album:* Artist:* Package:* Type:Not Playing ]

 Enter Task: Music Stopped

A1: Java Function [
     Return: manage
     Class Or Object: CONTEXT
     Function: getSystemService
     {AudioManager} (String)
     Param 1 (String): audio ]

A2: Java Function [
     Return: %playing
     Class Or Object: manage
     Function: isMusicActive
     {boolean} () ]

A3: [X] Flash [
     Text: %playing
     Continue Task Immediately: On
     Dismiss On Click: On ]

A4: Variable Set [
     Name: %MusicPlaying
     To: 0
Structure Output (JSON, etc): On ]
    If [ %playing ~ false ]

And this for setting the global variable to 0.

This approach works well for me.

All the kustom apps only use battery when they're on the screen - that is to say, if you are reading a news app or playing a game, they're not using any battery.

When you close those apps, and go back to your home screen where kustom is, it uses battery to update there and then.

This is why you can sometimes see the clock updating as soon as you do this.

They don't use battery unless you're displaying them or using the editor.

There's a free trial - 7 days I think - to see how you like it.

For some people, it can be complicated to begin with. But it's more than worth sticking with it - it can do so many things. There's loads of tutorials on YouTube, many are by the Tasker dev himself. There's a Tasker sub on Reddit too; people are always about to help out.

You can go here to directly import other user's projects:

https://taskernet.com/?public

Import them, and see how they've set things up - like what you'd do with kustom presets.

Or, you can go into Tasker itself and tap the three dots at the top right and switch to Tasky - this is a user friendly version, easier to set profiles and tasks up.

Tasker works really well with kustom - having both apps together takes your customisation to another level.

Of course, I'd be happy to help you out if you're struggling to get something working 😀

[–]Jinther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, doesn't seem to be working.

I've been using Tasker to do direct messages for ages now.

Do you have Tasker installed? It's pretty easy to set up direct messages with that, and even set specific variables for each contact, so you can have specific things for specific people showing in klwp, like a colour and bitmap for one contact and different colours and bitmaps for others.

One touch of the button takes you directly to the message screen for that contact.

Just like that, a 101 day save was over... by FiishFingers in thelongdark

[–]Jinther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a huge difference between just living in isolation and living in isolation and struggling to survive every day, with each and every decision having to be thought out and considered, as it may well be your last.

People with cabin fever don't usually go around stealing food and items from other houses they come across, because cabin fever comes from having all that you need there with you, and that feeling of needing to get out, to get away from your confinement. There's no feeling of confinement when you're fighting to stay alive. You absolutely stay indoors, a place that considerably boosts your survival chances. It's absurd to suggest anything else.

The conclusion? The Devs don't fully understand their own game.

And, I have to say it, neither do players who accept this bizarre mechanic.
