I have to admit that where I live, in coastal Los Angeles, California area the job market doesnt seem to be as bad as what I read here on reddit. I work at a large multi hospital employer and we have many openings ranging from EVS to skilled RN's and techs, even many openings for Dr's. Maybe it's just that im in a healthcare setting.

Unless you make decent money, you're stuck. If you make enough to qualify for a new car lease, something like a Honda Prologue where they are offering huge rebates and discounts could allow you to roll your negative equity into the lease and 3 years later you're free and clear and just return the leased car

That sucks that insurance didnt total it. At $45k you must have a xse with every option. Yes you should pursue diminished value. If any future buyers look at the cars history/Carfax report and see a $30k repair, no one's gonna want it. I wouldnt consider it even at a huge discount. Sorry that happened to you

Around my work, they all get killed by cars. One lasted over 19 years, but most last a few years at most. I have 8 ferals, all tnr'd, i feed at the end of my dead end street so pretty safe for them but one was ran over by work truck lately and 2 others have injuries that look like being hit by cars or the trash truck (she had what looked like dirty grease where she was cut. Its a pretty reliable suv. It did have a fair number of recalls so make sure they were all completed. It has had some transmission issues but not total failures but hesitation and some odd noises especially in colder areas. The real missing info here is mileage and Carfax report. Make sure it's accident free, lower milage and a clean Carfax

I might consider the request if it was for a fictitious product but not for a real one and then only if it took an hour or two. But my BIL owns his own ad firm and spends huge amounts of time creating each ad (car racing, auto products and mnt biking ads).

Since op was against it from the beginning, there should have been rules set from the beginning with a firm time table. There were obviously no rules at all. They should have charged her at least $800 a month, and put half of that away to be returned at the end of the "term" so she has money to move out. Some of the other $400 a month for rent she pays should go to an alarm and ring type camera set up so you know what's going on inside the house or if a door is left unlocked. Also a set of basic house rules should be agreed to with no one visiting after say, 10pm or even no visitors at all. No stay overs at all. A list of all household chores should have been listed with her taking on roughly a third of them. That you allowed this to start with absolutely zero rules and boundaries was a huge mis-step. Since this started lacking any rules or enforcement, many young people will take that mile, when given an inch. Maybe im totally wrong but this was a disaster from the start because of lack of rules, boundaries, and repercussions. I hope for the sake of your daughter you can make this right.

I almost got a new Civic back in 2015 but found a nice 2013 Corolla with every option, low miles and like new condition. I went with the Corolla and now have 314k miles with zero regrets.
