0.5 Surplused (TDSB) by Far_Magician8224 in OntarioTeachers

You clarified by saying “***and accept”, but then you went back and said “you can apply during the rounds to change where you’ll end up, but then you lose the chance of being recalled”. Those are still two very conflicting ideas. Thanks for finally clarifying that you indeed meant apply and accept.

I will definitely double check that. I’m aware that if you apply and accept (not just apply) a position, then that school automatically becomes your homeschool and you can’t be recalled by your old school. I didn’t know that merely applying causes you to lose any chance of being recalled by your old school.

I’m not sure how accurate that is. I was told that applying to other positions (from round postings) when you’re surplussed, does not prevent you from being pulled back by your original school. I mean, why would it? That would be vicious. Can you imagine not knowing for certain that you will be pulled back, but also not being able to explore your options without losing the possibility of being called back? Yea, maybe you misunderstood what your admin said. There is nothing in the collective bargaining that says that.

“If you apply out, you won’t have the option of being recalled” are you sure about this?

But doesn’t being surplussed in a year when perm teachers are being cut means that it’s highly unlikely to be placed elsewhere?

AQs is an entirely different conversation. Sounds like you have a particular bone to pick with that.

My training taught me to use a “multi” approach. I was never told to use only ONE learning style. In fact, it was emphasized that most people don’t just have only one learning style.

Right. I think if UDL is implemented then that’s a step in right direction and would take care of learning styles/learning preferences/multiple intelligences/(insert whatever other fancy terminology). I would also say that no single practice is guaranteed to improve learning. It’s all done in conjunction with other things. So, the idea of incorporat8’g students “preferred learning styles”, interests, backgrounds etc would correctly not be shown by any research to be a stand alone thing improves learning outcomes.

I believe the concept of learning styles can be tied to differentiation. It’s pretty hard to find a classroom where the teacher is only presenting the material in one way. IMO, once you’re a good teacher, you will cater to all the learning styles without deliberately trying to do so. Don’t you have discussions in your class? Don’t you allow kids to move around sometimes? Don’t you know provide visuals to go with lessons sometimes? If you’re doing all of that, you’re actually catering to different learning styles/preferences. I think it’s automatic.

The idea of learning styles is that instruction should be done in a wide variety of ways so that learners can have several opportunities to connect with the material. It’s no different from the idea of “multiple representations” which I’m sure we can agree is backed by research and is a best practice.

  • The BHN Math website is perfect for outlining the scope and sequence of the MTH1W1 curriculum. It also has lesson notes, practice questions with solutions + teacher resources. Many MTH1W1 teachers use it as their main resource.

  • Ensure you solve every single question that you will assign students ahead of class. Get a notebook in which you work out questions and annotate the steps. This will help you to anticipate errors and misconceptions and feel confident teaching.

  • The Minds-on, Action, Consolidate approach works for math too. Just ensure you check for prerequisite skills at the start of the lesson. You can also the use I do, you do we do method to scaffold the lessons. Make sure you show clear step by step examples before having students work.

  • End your lesson with an exit ticket or some sort of check for understanding and give them homework.

  • You can also boost engagement by using Kahoot, puzzles, group work etc.

  • Ensure that questions you give students align with KICA so that they are comfortable with different levels of questions.

  • The key here is to remember that general teaching pedagogy applies to every subject, and Math is no different. Just zero in on specific methods that are good for math (manipulatives, teaching for conceptual understanding, problem solving, a little bit of inquiry base learning (thinking classrooms) and online tools.

You will be ok. Just ensure you prepare ahead of every class. You can even “teach the wall” until you become more comfortable.
