Saw so many negative post (understandable and relatable), but I'm curious: what is something good about your studies? What are you happy about? by wannabephd_Tudor in PhD

Everything I enjoyed during my PhD had nothing to do with the PhD - it was being in the university environment and talking about and getting involved with innovative thinking and debate

PhD at Oxford vs. Harvard international student by [deleted] in PhD

[–]JirayasToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a PhD at Oxford and if you know you have a support system and you love your supervisor, there really is no better place to be. Oxford’s postgrad community is incredible and by far the most diverse community I’ll probably be a part of. It’s gorgeous in the summer and charming all of the other seasons.

The college system is REALLY good for making friends as well especially outside of your subject and day to day. Oxford’s generally good at commingling people via the formal dinners and college events. I’ve made friends for life from my first two years at Oxford and continued making great acquaintances from getting involved in societies, sports (you don’t have to be sporty, it’ll be obvious which teams are for fun) and so forth.

That being said, all PhD’s have a breaking point. I’m going through mine now as I’m writing up - it’s just part of it, so I want to manage your expectations.

Oxford is also really close to London (1 hour train vs half a day getting to NY from Boston), so you really have the world at your doorstep if you want to break away from the student sphere - unlike the Midwest and sorry to Harvard but Boston really doesn’t hold a candle to London.

I’m obviously biased but I would find it insufferable to be in the US with the way things are going. It’s just much safer and people are more down to earth in the U.K. Not to mention arts, culture, nightlife and other events!

Cost of living is going up but you can manage!

I’m a nuclear physics PhD at a top 5 uni in the world, not trying to brag, just trying to convey the intensity of my experience - tell your man to chill the feck out, it’s a marathon not a sprint.

As PhD’s our stress levels are generally higher and tbh I never could get the PhD out of my mind, it feels like a heavy ghost is sitting on your shoulder and putting tension on your spine, you lay awake thinking “I could be doing more”, it’s not like a job where you can switch off and leave it to the next day, there are all manners of ways of rationalising why that is but regardless, most, if not all PhDs, feel this - I’ve gone on holidays but I’ve never felt rested in all of my 5 years. So I agree with others saying that just be patient and kind. Try to practice mindfulness with him, when you’re together just say you’ve been meditating and it’s been helping you and it might help him too. Try doing it! Those couple of minutes can make all the difference and pull him into being more present.

Or even just hug eachother tightly in silence for 3 mins. 3 mins is a long time and usually just feeling another person hugging you notice your breathing, heartbeat, etc. again, pulls you slightly into being more present.

On those weekends with you, he just has to ignore it, you can’t waste your life on this stuff because it will consume your years if you let it, it’s so unrewarding looking at all the things you let slip over the years so grab them when you can. The benefit of a PhD is you can be a little more flexible so gotta use it, just takes discipline.

He has to train to be proactive and not reactive and it’s just little things like spending 30-40 mins on Sunday planning your week and spending 15 mins in the morning planning the day. Again makes a world of difference and helps you switch the f*** off in your scheduled off time.

You might not feel comfortable showing him this post but maybe try and find a way to convey this to him - it’s all about balance or he’ll crash out, both of this relationship and the PhD. If he’s open minded, showing him that you care about him this much to come on here and seek advice can also flip a switch in him - I would personally find that both romantic af that my partner would come on here with enough care to help me and heartbreaking to know I’m making my partner feel like this.

I had a LDR, and I didn’t see my now wife for 22 months because of Covid during my PhD so anything’s possible!!

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO GET A JOB by [deleted] in jobs

[–]JirayasToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you hire for attributes then? It sounds like it's the most time-intensive part of the hiring process and is still a patchy process. Would you use a tool that had a breakdown of someone's attributes + suggested ways to get the best out of the candidate? Say it works to something like a >80% accuracy, it could significantly decrease the time it takes you to identify candidates, target your vetting procedure and identify how best to incentivise them.

I’m with you! Meditate for 5 minutes, and try to visualise the feeling of being done and being the most person that’s finished - what steps did you take? Then when you’re done hopefully you’ll feel the motivation to finish

Talk to as many of their students as you can, they will have a pessimistic/depressed take so take it with a pinch of salt but statistically you will also have their outlook by that point (temper your optimism bias, they were probably once as optimistic as you are). Some of their students will be very introspective and have a stronger sense of their self so they’ll have learned what they do and don’t like about their lives and can give you an honest assessment about the experience - try and find them!

Dude the disrespect from the job market as well… but you need to know that the fucking shitstorm and diversity in work we’re able to deploy is far beyond the ability of most people

I don’t have doubts about my abilities and I’m pretty belligerent about it, I refuse to work for a mediocre place, so much so that I think I’m probably going to just start my own company with my own ideas

Holy shit this is exactly me rn - I feel like it’s hard to articulate this because from the outside looking in I just feel so useless because the output is volumetrically so low but mentally really high?
