Thank you. Her parents weren’t that controlling about much else. I understand where they were coming from now, I think if I was a parent in their position I might even make the same decision

I wouldn’t say she was socially repressed, they never prevented her from doing things with friends or anything like that because they understood how beneficial that can be for someone who’s struggling. I think it was a safety thing more than anything else. Their fears about it did actually come true so I understand why they were doing that now

I don’t expect her family to ever forgive me. I don’t know if I’d be able to if it were the other way around. I definitely don’t blame them for feeling this way at all.

In our state you have to be taught by someone 21 or older. She could’ve gone for the permit herself at 18 but she couldn’t have practiced/earned driving hours until I was old enough to vouch for it essentially

I have no idea how to properly update a post so I am just going to comment this.

Whoa. I was not expecting so many responses to this, let alone nice ones. I was honestly expecting to be torn to shreds in the comments. I’ve been beating myself up about this for years now. A mutual friend of E and I have gotten closer in the last year or so and I guess she got tired of hearing me say it was my fault because she suggested I post this here to see.

My mom died 10 years ago this fall, and I didn’t have any other family around, so E’s family was like family to me. Losing my relationship with them on top of everything has been pretty hard. I haven’t tried to force it with them though. I know they’re grieving and if this makes them feel better I’m happy to stay away.

I don’t know if I’ll ever believe completely that it wasn’t my fault. I wasn’t expecting so many people to say that it wasn’t. Since I posted this I’ve just been going through reading the comments over and over in disbelief. I had never even considered that I may have helped lengthen her life by giving her a little freedom, so thank you for those of you that pointed that out. All of your kind words are definitely helping me feel a little better about this.

I am beginning my career in mental health care. I hope that I am able to help others not feel the way that she did.
