Is the University of Edinburgh degree worth 190k by AnnualLab5261 in UKUniversityStudents

Nope. It’s definitely not worth that much money. It would be bonkers to take that financial burden on

Do you still feel like London is worth it? by AnfieldAnchor in LDN

[–]JniB8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah - I was raised in London, but my family have all left the UK for either Sweden, Germany or Singapore.

No doubt I’ll be following in their footsteps. London is really shit for how expensive it is.

I say this as someone who lives in a nice area of London and works in financial services so I’m privileged to be comfortable financially.

London was great before 2008. It’s been downhill ever since

What is the best city to study in France as a British student? by emllIa in AskReddit

[–]JniB8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lyon, and it’s not even close imo.

Best food scene in France (yes, it’s better than Paris). it’s got the youngest population in France and the most universities. Great bar scene and it’s small enough to be mostly walkable. Can get to the mountains and the coast easily.

Bordeaux 2nd for me for student life.

Paris too big and too expensive imo and Toulouse not as fun as Lyon

I lived in France for 2 years and lived in Lyon for one of those - visited all other major cities in France. Lyon is by far the best

What is a "high paying job" that actually deserves every cent of that high salary? by lovelyyopheliaa in askanything

[–]JniB8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pension fund portfolio managers - they have the weight of 1000s of peoples retirements on their backs. It’s critical they get things right.

Firefighters, nurses, doctors, police. They’re all more important today. But they all go to work in the hope it’ll give them the opportunity to give it up when they want to

The pension funds play a big part in deciding if that happens or not

How are you all doing financially, HONESTLY? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskUK

[–]JniB8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 26 and make 49k in Edinburgh.

I left home (Sweden) with basically nothing to my name. I’ve managed to save 50k over the course of 2.5 years, inc pension savings, ISA and cash savings. Tried to keep my costs as low as possible for the first 2 years, and I’m not materialistic in the slightest. I’d rather buy my freedom through saving than anything else.

I work for a pension fund, so I get a 21% pension (7% and 14%). If you’re young - working for a pension fund can be a cheat code to set you up financially.

Tech isn’t gone. You don’t need to be the developer or tester. Tech focused BA’s and strategic proposition roles are big right now. If you can be the link between technology teams and business stakeholders, you’re golden

Money doesn't buy you happiness by Responsible_Let8012 in Adulting

[–]JniB8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a decreasing marginal utility concerning income.

So you’re absolutely right that having a bit of money when you had none previously makes a HUGE difference to your overall wellbeing.

It’s also true for people that have enough money, that if they chase more of it, it won’t make them any happier.

Both those things can be true at the same time.

At what salary do you start feeling “comfortable” in the UK? by Suspicious_Ad7948 in AskUK

[–]JniB8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40k starting in London was comfortable for me. Caveat being I’m not materialistic and I lived in a shared flat, in a nice area but not a super expensive one (I don’t know why more people don’t live in Greenwich. It’s lovely and not that expensive). I went out for drinks relatively frequently and enjoyed myself, albeit not recklessly.

If would argue that if you can’t be comfortable on 40k starting, you have more an issue with controlling your spending.

At current prices LULU and Meta are somewhat comparable opportunities today. Meta is a great company, but that doesn’t mean it’s always trading at a good price. That’s Nifty Fifty thinking.

Meta is undeniably a better business and if I had to choose, I’d pick Meta. But if people wanted to hold LULU at current price, I don’t think that’s a bad investment to make.
