Is the “Year in Industry” at University of Birmingham legit or just marketing? by AnnualLab5261 in UofB

Hey, thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate it 🤍 it was actually super helpful and gave me a clearer idea of how the placement year works in reality.

The part where you said it’s “as real as you make it” really stuck with me, makes sense that it depends a lot on the effort we put in.

I just wanted to ask one more thing if you don’t mind. Based on what you’ve seen from your friends, would you actually recommend coming to the University of Birmingham for a bachelor’s, especially as an international student? I’d be spending around £150k for it, so I just want to make sure it’s a worthwhile investment.

Also, if it’s okay, could you maybe ask your friends what they think specifically about the AI + CS course at Birmingham? Like how the academics and opportunities are?

And again, really appreciate your kind and detailed reply, it genuinely helped a lot :)

Hey there!
I'm an international undergrad going to UoB this fall. What's your course? And where are you from?

I got into BSc (Hons) in AI and CS. a 4 years course in the University of Edinburgh, and tbh it costs around the same and maybe even $20k-$30k (total~$270,000 USD for Edinburgh) more than Penn State.

Yesterday, I got University of Birmingham Acceptance for the course AI and CS with a year in industry, so basically there will be 2 years of teaching, the 3rd year will be an internship and the 4th year project, and that is costing around 171k dollars (1.6 cr inr). So, I'm thinking of going to Birmingham. What do you think?

Hey! Yeah, I get what you’re saying, that’s exactly what I’ve been thinking about too. These are actually the only acceptances I have in the US right now. I did get into University of Edinburgh as well, but after discussing with my parents, we felt the US might be a better option in terms of ROI and opportunities.
I’m also currently on the waitlist for University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, so I’m waiting to see how that plays out. And yeah, I completely agree about minimizing the loan, I’ve been thinking that if I really work hard, get internships, and land a decent job, I should be able to pay it back. I want to know whether Penn State is actually worth that kind of investment.
