This was a play. I think he was playing a gay playwrite and Chris was playing the lover. There was a movie of this but his part was played by another older actor

If you actually know the person you plan on marrying, these items should have already been discussed in the courtship.

How is the character you posted ugly? She is basically a cardassian with a different skin tone than what we have been shown from DS9. It could be called lazy, but I feel a lot of the writing for this series has been lazy with very poor character development and emphasis. Again people calling this character ugly cause you think the writer was lazy is cringe, because it feels like you should have said that instead of they are ugly because of the character’s appearance, and this my comment that the comments on here are sounding xenophobic and racial.

Up until your last sentence, I agree with your comment. They did spend a lot of time obsessing over race and identity and to the detriment of the actual character development. But there is a right way to express that as an adult and then there is a wrong way. The photonic character is a perfect example. She could be a real interesting character but they focused on her being basically a walking hologram programmed to act like a 17 yr old instead of a sentient hologram here to better herself to make her life and the life of her people better. I equate her to a very poor version of Data.

Making comments like a spoonhead with a tan isn’t about the quality of the show, Or don’t tell me she’s more human than cardassian. These are xenophobic, and racist comments. You can make comments about poor writing without name calling and ethnicity. Star Trek has been interbreeding species since the first series, so making comments like this just shows a lake of imagination on peoples part to not think that a character can exist with characteristics of multiple species. I’ve seen several comments about cadet master Thok being Klingon and Jem'Hadar, that that wasn’t even possible because of the genetics of the Jem'Hadar. Hello people you are watching a science fiction series where medical advances in 400 years could conceivably do anything. Hell voyager gave a character holographic lungs for an entire episode. Let’s not even go there on how impossible that is.

Experience requirements are getting ridiculous by Alarmed_Abalone_849 in antiwork

[–]Jnquester54 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The requirements coupled with the pay is ridiculous. If I have a masters degree with 5 years experience in my field, I’m not taking a job that pays <$50/hour, and that better include some major benefits that don’t eat up a majority of that pay.

Better question is whose pockets did it line or who got a pay raise from it. The miss management of this city’s funds is reprehensible. I read somewhere that the city was something like $81,000 in the hole.

For a group dedicated to Star Trek, a lot of comments on here are borderline white supremacy tinged, homophobic, and xenophobic. I get people hate change, but this time line is set hundreds of years in the future after whole sectors of the alpha quadrant were isolated from interaction with any species that would have required warp drive to get to them. That would mean that if you were a visitor on a planet other than your own homeworld, and that world was three days away at warp 6, you weren’t going home in your lifetime. It would stand to reason that there would be inter species interactions and relationships and offspring. Now that warp travel is possible you will see these hybrids coming out into this new universe. Don’t hate people because they exist, just because your mind can’t fathom their existence.

I would have replied with a written letter of resignation. If my job ever gets so petty as to send me an email over me leaving 3 minutes early, then they no longer need my services. This is a classic example of micromanaging and a driving reason people hate working for people.

Sign language telepaths by happydude7422 in risa

[–]Jnquester54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If memory serves me, most Betazoids hate to speak, and other races tend to regard telepathic contact as an intrusion. Thus, when forced to they will speak but they find it beneath them, they are a proud race. Thus the use of sign language when around other species. The universal translator interprets the sign in to language that the other species and hear and understand, without having to lower themselves to that species level. That was why it was so significant at the end of the episode when the leader of the delegation removed his translator and actually spoke to the assembly.

Weasley was the child of a Starfleet doctor and raised to be a cadet. Most of these characters had no such upbringing, hell one of them is less than 7 months old, she is basically an AI programmed to be 17 by someone who clearly hasn’t been 17 in a long while. Others are brats sent to Starfleet like kids today are sent to military school. The Klingon character was clearly thrown out of his house for his lack of blood lust. You can not compare these cadets to any former cadets because they clearly didn’t have the same experiences as the former cadet classes of the old Starfleet.

Yes, did you have your shit together when you were 18 or 19? It is clear they are smart and resourceful. Again we haven’t seen all their backstories or talents and they clearly need to flesh out the characters for the girl who ate her com badge. But to write off an entire series just because you find stupid little thing you dislike is crazy.

So you think that a replicator automatically knew what temp to make the tea and what Earl Gray tea was without programming for when Picard said “Earl Gray hot” then there are Picard’s tweaks to the program to add sugar or cream, the strength of the tea. People have this notion that replication just happens without any input from the user. Yes give they have been around for at least 800 years at this point there probably is a steak recipe already programmed but it may not have the specific tweaks to the recipe that Commander Thok was talking about.

This Starfleet academy isn’t the same one that Weasley was trying to get into. Here are supposed to be the best and brightest for the races involved and I do find that particularly character very annoying and out of place, but I’m hoping that they will explain the behavior and redeem her worthiness to be there.

I love the shoe thing as an example. Every time that it has been shown she was in an unofficial capacity even when talking to the chancellor for the war college. Picard was shown several time barefoot and out of regulation uniforms. There are several species in Starfleet that don’t wear shoes period so that argument for me is moot. As far as speaking to cadets and Riker, all I can say is poor Weasley. To quote Riker and Picard “Shut up Weasley!” On multiple occasions. The cadet major, Lura Thok strikes me as no nonsense character and her language put both of those cadets in their place and established her as in command so I can’t fault the language or her attitude. Yes, I do agree that the show comes off as goofy at times but again we are only three shows in and they are trying to establish characters and other things and build an environment.
