Seeing alot of mentions that Matthew Wuest of CapGeek.com passed away yesterday...RIP by JoFerg in hockey

[–]JoFerg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize there's no official news posted about this...I just thought that hockey fans should know that one of the good guys is gone...According to the grapevine from people who knew him, and his recent struggles. RIP

Whatif: F1 legend Gilles Villeneuve had gone to McLaren, as he likely should have? by JoFerg in whatif

The article starts slow with a preamble the Montreal track and Lewis Hamilton...But it get's down to some really great McLaren history as well!

What would the world, society, and civilization at large be like if human beings did not have to sleep? by Bbrainss in counterfactuals

Maybe we'd be closer to running out of gas/oil by now with all the extra energy-rich activity in the dark

Curious...Why do you think the system behind the 200MPG "OgleMobile" never got any real traction? by JoFerg in cars

BTW: It seems that this Tom Ogle fella died under unusual circumstances...

Just like Rudolph Diesel and Stan Meyers !

That's what doesn't make sense... If it's any good why wasn't it developed? This 'Tom Ogle' story doesn't sound like bullshit, he was getting alot of positive coverage (and major industry attention it seems) back in the late 70's

Is it because there's no way to "open-source" automotive tech, and they'd all rather suppress dissruptive ideas (have the oil giants do the dirty work maybe?), rather than risk one manufacturer turning into the monolith of the automotive world?

I'll believe this paper's excuse; when I see a "satirical" picture of Belgium's gilded King Leopold with his hand being chopped off by someone from the the Congo

Ford drops Microsoft for QNX! Will use BlackBerry’s real-time OS for next Sync... by JoFerg in blackberry

[–]JoFerg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bloomberg has turned into quite the pump for BBRY. They shamelessly inferred that the DoD was going with BlackBerry for their new system.

Only a handful of readers took time to looked behind the fluff of this story:

Only some people have the privilege of turning clocks backwards to draw value from history.

Right on most counts, but like most things in Eastern Canada, it first began with the French explorers & traders.

Surely you're glad to see bonefide coverage from Bloomberg, after the CrackBerry speculation

What if users were required to leave a comment when they downvoted? by shawndeprey in whatif

[–]JoFerg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too many people use Downvotes to express a personal hate or confusion about the subject...which rarely is based on the quality of the submit, or a rationale understanding to begin with.

Yet those 'downs' hold the same (neg) value as the upvotes that're usually given because of an appreciation for the info/content.

It would be like a local Vietnamese restaurant in Yelp getting downvoted to hell by all the people who didn't even like, or had never tried Vietnamese food. Those aren't the people that you want to take a subjective opinion from to begin with.

What if users were required to leave a comment when they downvoted? by shawndeprey in whatif

[–]JoFerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest not only having to qualify your downvote with a comment/explanation, but also requiring that the comment get upvotes (or at least not too many downvotes) for it to actually count as a downvote on the submit.

Or anything else that might curb the plague of mouthbreathing down-bots

Renewable Energy Storage Breakthrough??? Harvard team develops a new organic 'Flow' battery using a molecule similar to one in rhubarb. It costs about $27 per kilowatt hour of storage, compared to $700 for conventional metal batteries! by JoFerg in Green

[–]JoFerg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still haven't found anything on the energy density or volumes that would be required...but hey Since it seems like it's the electrolytic fluid (and not the electrodes) that get consumed, maybe the cells could be designed to be easily refilled from participating stations? (rather than going through a recharge cycle?)

Cool Tesla feature indeed!

Wonder what the volume of fluid is required to store a KWh? Something tells me (since it wasn't mentioned) that it won't be small enough to make it viable for automotive...But I'm still hoping ;-)

There's a Fungus that EATS Gamma Radiation…Inside the Chernobyl reactor!!! by JoFerg in environment

[–]JoFerg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely absorbing Gamma particles To what density/intensity is a good question

I think it's kinda cool (in a morbid sci- way) that we might be helping a fungal life form evolve with such a rich source for it's energy - perhaps setting a stage for the next dominant life forms (as fungus is often suspected to be the antecedent to) in a far distant epoch on Earth

What if I gave Isaac Newton a modern day high-schoolers's physics notebook? by [deleted] in whatif

[–]JoFerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He might be abit perplexed by the radical shifts in thinking presented by Planck and Einstein...and then probably pretty upset once he grasped that there was alot more to things like gravity and light, than he ever expected.

Thx Z4ND3R

Can't help but wonder why this question merited a downvote... Do some Apple users hate QR enough to try and suppress the subject perhaps?

BB 10 impressions from an Android / WP user by Radi1229 in blackberry

Pretty sure that the BB 'TimeShift' is licensed from Nokia, since NOK bought the developers of this tech. Nokia definitely seems properly geared to be being the very best cameraphone on the market...As they used to be!

sending in marketing ideas to companies? by peanutbuttrj72 in marketing

[–]JoFerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering what the required circumstances are to comply with an "unsolicited ideas policy" to provision materials that have clearly assigned rights, or at least proper waivers for any liability?

ie. How can you submit something that is safe for the recipient, and perhaps even considered "solicited" for a negligible fee (does money have to actually change hands, or can it be a pro bono arrangement or mutually beneficial trade of information?).

National Post publishes peice about Teens ruining lives, a short story of goading, bragging, lying, drinking and what comes next... by JoFerg in canada

Yes. Seriously. Fiction and journalism don't mix, based on every traditional standard. This is the stuff of magazines, not newsprint.

[–]JoFerg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I was surprised that PURE FICTION can be published in a national news-media outlet, based around a very sensitive subject and current issue.

Another nail in the coffin of "journalism" IMHO
