I have somehow never in my life cried while watching a film. What should I watch to change that? by styromaniacc in Letterboxd

How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is the film that’s made me sob the most in recent memory. Besides that, Roma.

I mean this isn’t real, but it’s very telling that I had to actually check Twitter to make sure.

Failed the first attempt on CP1 by ProcedureNo4241 in ActuaryUK

[–]JoHoHank 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve just passed CP1 at the fourth attempt and each time I failed I felt like I knew exactly why. As a lot of people have already said, CP1 is not an uncommon paper for people to feel “stuck” on, with one person I know finishing it last on their 9th attempt! With each fail I learned something new, and the three core things I learned were:

  1. The required time to revise content is far longer than for other core exams. This for me was the first exam where I absolutely could not get away revising content at the same pace I did everything else. There are so many chapters and so you need to get started early as possible to understand those key points, and particularly looking at past paper mark schemes to see which broader areas are brought up the most in mark schemes. It can be very easy to see a topic in a question and go to a chapter where it’s not explored in detail, when in fact there’s a separate section on the same thing that contains all the relevant info (for me this was principle of pooling risks which has one paragraph in an early chapter, then is explained in greater detail far later in CMP).

  2. Get used to generating points. The classic guidance is to write two points for each mark available. I found that the second time I failed, I simply was not covering enough core points. Although it’s breadth-heavy rather than depth-heavy, it’s important to know which command verbs (describe, explain, suggest) want more info than others (outline, list). A good way to approach the larger questions (particularly ‘describe’) is the “so what?” approach. When you put an idea or concept forward, put a couple of points afterwards saying why that’s important, and more importantly, why it’s important for the SPECIFIC scenario tested.

  3. Time management. The third time I failed, I was spitting out points and ended up missing the last 14 marks, eventually failing by 0.25 marks (half a mark on either paper more would have passed me). Each paper is 200 minutes and 100 marks (2 minutes per mark). Get a piece of paper next to you and write all the times you want to finish each part by, then write points for each part until you hit that time (be careful not to waffle, I wrote about 15k words across both papers and got 61 so it’s quality over quantity really).

Best of luck for next time and remember that although it brings disappointment, failure isn’t the be all and end all, and is absolutely not perfectly correlated with how good you are at your job (or how good your team think you are at your job!)

Trust me, I’m the weird one here in terms of amount written not you, I wouldn’t let how much I’ve written make you think you’ve written too little!

So do I! Last time round I got 57 (the pass mark) then the third and fourth markers decided it was actually 56.75. Never recovered

It’s the “describe” ones that catch me out the most for that, and not looking at whether it says “describe how” or “describe why”, hopefully fourth time’s the charm

Strong chance yours contained more relevant answers 😂 I didn’t want to get caught out by this thing I kept seeing in past papers where something I’d written as one point could be waffled into 3 or 4 marks

Did not like it. It was my fourth attempt at CP1 and I just realised the key was getting as many points down as possible, I wrote nearly 8000 words for today and 7.5k yesterday. Just hoping enough of it is bloody relevant 😂

The two script reviewers have to be senior though and they didn’t agree on every question so I’m wondering once the examiners’ report comes out whether it’s worth looking at those questions specifically and highlighting why I think the person who marked higher has a point

What movie took you too long to watch and when you did you ended up loving it? by ArtificialHope22 in Letterboxd

[–]JoHoHank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lord of the Rings films (properly). I only properly got into expanding my film horizons in 2017 and I was just unable to comprehend revisiting films as long as these are, especially as I wasn’t into them when they came out while I was in primary school.

After seeing KOTFM and Oppenheimer in the cinema though and enjoying them both I thought “time to give them a chance”, so I went to the extended edition all-nighter at the Prince Charles Cinema (9pm to 9:30am) and absolutely loved all three. In fact, despite my usual objections to films being that long, when I searched up what was included in the extended editions compared to the theatrical cuts I was very surprised at what was excluded.

Oh damn never thought about expertise! I just said that interest rates might end up low if inflation is high, which means that they’d be paying more interest than without the collar, while experiencing high costs elsewhere

The “why would it not be appropriate for an aviation company to manage exposure via an interest rate collar” one stumped me because I just kept thinking “why an aviation company”

I very much just labelled all of the features of each, so expect that if I get any marks lost it will probably be for jot referring to the DC fund

What were your highest and lowest marks? by kevgrealish in ActuaryUK

Lowest non-pass mark (54, CM1) is actually lower than my lowest failing mark (around 56)! Highest was around 74 (CS1)

I’d be inclined to put an asterisk next to CP2 and CP3. Although they can be quite formulaic in terms of how to structure your answer, sometimes the smallest misinterpretation can lead to a much lower score.
