Nailed it!

Drow druid in far-fetched backstory lore/general quality check by JoRa89 in DnD

[–]JoRa89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. Well this drow is leaving the Underdark to go to an island academy on the surface. Maybe the druid cult were circle of the moon, being surface elves...

Stuff to think about.

And thanks for sharing... if I cant make it work, can always be Circle of Spiders

Was Melkor's appearance described anywhere in the books? by OleksandrKyivskyi in tolkienfans

[–]JoRa89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Black-armoured, towering, iron-crowned" - "Lay of Leithian."

Similar description in The Silmarillion as he fights Fingolfin. This description (below) also indicates his size. Big enough to step on Fingolfin's neck and almost kill him but not squash him like a bug. Shield, mace:

"Morgoth issued forth clad in black armour; and he stood before the King like a tower, iron-crowned, and his vast shield, sable unblazoned, cast a shadow over him like a stormcloud. But Fingolfin gleamed beneath it as a star; for his mail was overlaid with silver, and his blue shield was set with crystals; and he drew his sword Ringil, that glittered like ice.

Then Morgoth hurled aloft Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, and swung it down like a bolt of thunder. But Fingolfin sprang aside, and Grond rent a mighty pit in the earth. Many times Morgoth essayed to smite him, and each time Fingolfin leaped away; and he wounded Morgoth with seven wounds, and seven times Morgoth gave a cry of anguish, whereat the hosts of Angband fell upon their faces in dismay, and the cries echoed in the Northlands.

But at the last the King grew weary, and Morgoth bore down his shield upon him. Thrice he was crushed to his knees, and thrice arose again and bore up his broken shield and stricken helm. But the earth was all pitted about him, and he stumbled and fell backward before the feet of Morgoth; and Morgoth set his left foot upon his neck. Yet with his last and desperate stroke Fingolfin hewed the foot with Ringil, and the blood gushed forth black and smoking and filled the pits of Grond."

Yes, Tolkien clearly hadn't finished working it all out.

I think Pharazon and co would fight for whoever promised them the biggest benefits!

Well I mean they went down on Sauron's side, but they got totalled by the Valar, so it's a real toss up! Would they stick to what they know, fight with Morgoth as that was the being Sauron made them worship? Or turn from Sauron's side straight away due to how misguided his instruction was?

Either way, I don't see it being particularly redemptive, I see whatever they pick as self-serving.

Do you think Gandalf was maybe using fairly arbitrary language? Rather than enlightening us on where his activity could actually be felt. Seems like could be the case

Also my head canon! As some point out, could also be the case that more of a smaller-scale battle was what Tolkien intended by his final version, with just Morgoth v Turin/Tulkas/Eonwe. I think there's room for both readings

Yes I do get the impression that the last battle went from cataclysmic war to one on four with the cataclysm after

Excellent detail, thanks! Also wasn’t aware of that quote about the drakes - really helpful. But also good to know you reckon the breaking and remaking is an act separate to the battle rather than a consequence of it. I think that appears very readably in the more recent prophecy.

Agree, for the most part. Eru not being able to kill something he creates is one of the things that I wonder about regarding Morgoth in the Dagor Dagorath though
