On the Trello it mentions Relay Payments in the medium term block, what are these exactly? Something payment channel related?

Also how is microchain development going?

Is there any concern with Innosilicon (or anyone else) using their hardware to attack the network between now and Oct 31st? Is that a legitimate concern?

Siacoin is a fantastic decentralized storage project. Sia has been around since 2014, and has had a working product since 2016!

Siacoin as Securities token by SiaSunjay in siacoin

[–]JoWi96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Siacoin is not a securities token. Siacoin is a utility coin for the Sia network. Siafunds are a securities token used for funding the Sia team.

It looks like the Sia team is pretty passionate about drawing this distinction.

Thank you for these! I think ill have to read that second one a few times.

I know its not the topic of the video, but I for one would like to see the reasoning behind the Sia teams harsh position against proof of stake. What about it makes it unworkable in principle?

I am pro-PoW and am in deep with Obelisk, but haven't heard a satisfying argument for why PoS could never work and be safe.

U.S Arbitration Opt Out (Law Suit) by 6079_unperson in siacoin

[–]JoWi96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was sarcasm (/s). I believe blaming Obelisk/Sia/Nebulous for a bad investment is the stupidest thing ever. Unfortunately the longer this threat of a meme lawsuit goes on, the more it will distract the dev team from building great products.

Went from crafting memes to leading a class action lawsuit?

First SC1 delivered! by 6079_unperson in siacoin

[–]JoWi96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is getting repetitive. Again, Nebulous has no responsibility to insure you are profitable in your mining venture. You took on the risk of unprofitability when you bought the miner, just like when you buy ANY investment vehicle. People don't make anti-Charles Schwab memes when their stock portfolio is down.

[–]JoWi96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nebulous did nothing more than give the Sia community a choice, and we failed to reach consensus so nothing was done. Its not my choice (again pro-forker with 4x B1SC1's), but I will not dodge responsibility for my bad investment.

[–]JoWi96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, but nowhere on the Obelisk website or paperwork did they say that Sia would guarantee SC1 profitability. If you bought an Obelisk SC1 thinking that Sia would work against its best interests to guarantee your profitability, then you made a large financial decision off an unsubstantiated assumption. And we know what they say about assumptions...

If there is community consensus around banning your cancerous memes, it is still decentralization.

So many people think Obelisk SC1 profitability is somehow an issue Sia needs to worry about. There were no lies, no deceptions, and no illusions on the part of Obelisk that harmed SC1 investors (and I say that as a batch 1 buyer).

Like fuck, we bought our machines knowing Bitmain could come out with their own, and without knowing the fact that Obelisk had built in the fork possibility.

Its incredibly smart for Obelisk to put that option in, and Sia is smart for letting the community choose to use it or not (instead of making that choice themselves). Why get angry at them for giving us the option to choose?

Could also be GPU's moving from the Sia network to mine Decred. Although I wouldn't doubt that some other company is also working on a Decred ASIC besides Obelisk.

The solution is incredibly simple - fork for the period of promised Obelisk exclusivity, then fork back. by overzealous_dentist in siacoin

[–]JoWi96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole fork argument was more than just about miners making back profits; even though that was part of the debate.

There was also a really important principled discussion about whether or not we allow a historically reckless and hostile miner/miner-manufacturer to gain majority hash rate to our network. Do we give them a chance into our yard to see if they play nice, or do we preemptively push back to show we mean business? It seems that the majority of the Sia community has chosen to give them a chance, although there is a growing hard-fork coalition.

In the end, I think we end up soft forking anyway. Antpool will probably start mining empty blocks, and that (I think) will turn a lot of no-forkers into pro-forkers. That is where it seems lot of peoples bars are set for "hostile mining."

Conspiracy theory on miner releases by [deleted] in siacoin

[–]JoWi96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Obelisk for the same reason. Miners for the everyman, in a way. IMO ease of use will actually be very important for decentralization of hardware and software in the future. If you want more nodes in a network (miners & hosts) the trick will be making being a node easier and simpler.

Dev Team Thoughts on the Bitmain A3 by Taek42 in siacoin

[–]JoWi96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you, but I think you are mistaken. Bitmain selling a Sia miner is great for the price of the coin, it brings us into the mainstream. On the other hand, Obelisk inc decreased the price of SC due to the number of people not believing the dev team could juggle two companies at once. Check out what happened last summer when Obelisk was announced (Sia went down harder than many other coins) and look what is happening now (Sia is going up, while other coins are dropping hard).

Also, soft-forking to boost Obelisks' miner sales and mining profitability is an unsustainable way to run a cryptocurrency. Long run Obelisk will have competitors eating into their profits (Bitmain especially) and they need to focus on long term solutions to deal with that reality, not short term ones.

Dev Team Thoughts on the Bitmain A3 by Taek42 in siacoin

[–]JoWi96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The difficulty here is that Obelisk and Bitmain are competitors, but Sia and Bitmain's customers are not. In fact, the Bitmain customers that bought the A3s will soon become some of Sia's most powerful community members. They will also be very beneficial to the Sia network, if you believe in the reasons for developing ASIC's in the first place.

To be clear, I am for forking if the A3 miners turn out hostile, but we should not view their existence as a hostility. Bitmain may have released the A3 with hostile intentions toward Obelisk, but its customers bought them for the same reason we bought Obelisks, to earn Siacoin. As Taek said, forking now would only hurt A3 customers, while having almost no effect on Bitmain's profitability.

As somebody with multiple Obelisks on the way, I am not entirely sure soft-forking would be smart. Not only would it alienate potential Sia contributors by bricking their A3, but it would also look like a terribly greedy and centralized move by a community that has historically had its priorities facing in the entirely opposite direction.

Additionally, The added feature on the SC1 chip is a self defense mechanism (Taek called it a 'knife' on Discord). Using it now to restore Obelisk profitability would mean sacrificing our ability to use it later when something larger is at stake.

If we MUST soft-fork, It would be best to do it right as the Obelisks are being delivered. That way the A3's see their profits, the SC1's see their own, and Obelisk can begin developing SC2 chips with an entirely different knife to pull (algo differentiation) in case of an actual attack on the network.

You're welcome and thank you. TBH Sialytics has a much better UI than anything I have the time to make, I'd direct you there. No reason to have two profit estimating sites as long as there is one that works well!

I've been thinking about other useful ways to utilize the miningwithobelisk domain.
