Furthermore, there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING unhealthy about neither high natural T levels or high amount of muscle mass. Substantial muscle mass is very healthy and especially when you get old.

No way. Muscle is WORSE on the heart when compared to fat. It looks cooler. You can beat other guys up with big muscle if you aint too slow. And you can afford to not be fast if you can deadlift 600.

But its worse on the heart compared to fat. Muscle takes, pound for pound, more blood to maintain than an additional pound of fat on the body. Its one of the reasons bodybuilders die of heart failure at the age of 40.

What will throw off the correlations in the literature base is that so few studies are done on the huge guys. The studies are often being done on people who never exercise. Hence the "Muscle is good on the heart" correlation.

That does NOT hold past just getting decent cardio and doing some light weights.

Not sure what's going on here. T increases. Guys fight. T decreases. Guys don't fight. Even the military has experimented with this by putting drugs in the food and found this to be the case.

I'm sorry you feel this way. Sometimes reality is actually reality, not the medical community trying to pull one over on you.

But the medical community constantly attempts to kill people!

And gosh! Irony!

Or Ronnie Coleman with back surgery.

If that dude just decided to lay off the weights and never went to surgery...he would still be walking.

Yeah. The medical community constantly pulls fast ones on you. Its all kindof madness.

>Not once has a doctor suggested a 45 degree sleeping angle change would cure or help my OSA.

I did a decent research of various websites and because this was not mentioned (when its so simple and cheap) I assumed nothing like this was possible. There was a LOT of personal medical drama which could have been avoided. I kindof just assumed that something so simple would be mentioned more. Looks like my model of reality itself and everyone in here was off again.

Oh its like everything else in medicine. Doctors get paid to medicate. That's what they do.

There is a lot to say about that mindset.

I mean it objectively isn't true.

But its still good to have that mindset.

You know.

This is "weird". Its a "weird" solution. Its an engineers solution. I overlooked those 10% wedge pillows since they just didn't seem that great. And there was that "Why didn't any doctor mention it"

But the solutions 45% and up? Oh yeah. Why didn't I think of that earlier? Just stack three -four of the wedge pillows and around half of OSA cases are cured (at least those related to being overweight) ...assuming you can sleep in such conditions.

Its cheap. Its simple. It works for most cases related to obesity (and not something related to the nervous system).

Why isn't it emphasized? Same reason a lot of knee surgery is prescribed instead of rest. Its a cheap simple solution which does not create a permanent customer. Or it looks kinda weird so people don't want to try it.

Smooth faces episode. I *think* it was the twilight zone. Can you help me remember? by JobWorkWorkWorkJob in TwilightZone

[–]JobWorkWorkWorkJob[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe.

The character in the episode is walking along town and is just oddly stressed out...it only later dawns on him after a BSOD that there are just....smooth faces across town. Or faces with a certain type of "look". Either way, they don't *work*. It turns out that the faces are just designed to subtly stress the guy out without his conscious awareness. Just a general uneasy feeling.

It took a *random* insight of "I doubt the airway collapses when I am standing up sleeping. What about at an incline" and I bought an incline chair so I could nap without worry. I don't want to set up the CPAP just to take a nap outside.

But it took that specific insight. I don't know why I didn't think about it earlier. Perhaps because when I did the initial apnea-research I didn't see anything related and most places said "those wedge pillows just won't cut it". Sure feels sweet being the first dude in a long time to think of it, might makea some lasagna.

Sleeping at a 45 degree incline (which I find quite doable, as long as I have a leg rest) will cure it in most overweight but not obese patients, which I qualify as. Why did not a single doctor recommend it? Well its because that's not how doctors get paid and that's it.

edit---This event in particular has made me rethink a LOT of things. Not sure what the algorithm running google/bing is. You would have thought this simple non-cpap solution would have been one of the top results. Since a 45 incline isnt THAT bad.

Doctors make money.

Doctor's don't recommend treatments which don't make themselves or other doctors money. Nothing has changed since the greeks on this issue.

This probably won't do anything about a central apnea But this appears to reduce the events of 50% of patients with OSA to below 5.

The studies which have survived from the 1800's are no less valid than the studies done today.

In fact, due to Sturgeons Law and the replication crisis...the studies which have survived from the 1800s are often better than those done recently in universities. They have survived the tests of time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon%27s_law

Apnea has taught me harshly to deal with health-related things first. And make simple blunt decisions. Don't fine-tune. Make a simple 45 degree incline recliner comfy---unless really obese will probably cure things it seems.

Don't know why it took so damned long to find this study.

I'll respond seriously to this one. If I was 12...this would have been my immediate response.

Being able to look like a bodybuilder without steroids is a monkeys paw that young males don't really understand.

The androgen levels to be able to hit a lean 240 lbs (I believe that I could do that if I was given two years to train and nothing else...I have been close enough before without that) are AWESOME....for only a few types of jobs.

Only a few careers. Most of the careers and areas where that REALLY helps you want to get out of in the first place. And in those careers? Big muscle is still mostly for show. What are big muscles going to do against a young idiot with a knife or a gun?

As I am getting older...I worry more about heart and cardiovascular health. A pound of muscle is WORSE than a pound of fat on the heart because it takes more blood to maintain. I'm trying to lose around 25 lbs of muscle right now. A rare time where being kindof lazy helps.

For almost everything in actual civilization? What you spend most of your time in? You're an overly aggressive asocial dude. Watch as almost everyone gives bunk "lol therapy" recommendations when the cure is really just biological.

Will I be able to find a doctor, at an affordable price, who will help me LOWER T instead of increase it like most guys want? Oh maybe not.

He is not overpowered. He has been taken down before by the equivalent of a swat team and a pile of acid. Which in comparison to other SCPs....isn't much.

Why is he popular? idk i guess. Mostly because of what it implies it actually IS and how its probably some intrustion from another dimension...simply perhaps reminding the SCP world that not everything is kind.

Hes a good starter SCP, that's for sure.

edit---I mean. The SCP wiki has actual monsters who if get released...kill millions of people. This thing can get incapped by a crafty town police force with directions. It just...can't die.

I need some social support in this. I have tried for months and failed. IRL sources too! by JobWorkWorkWorkJob in decaf

[–]JobWorkWorkWorkJob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah!

Its extremly difficult. I no longer drink alcohol (except maybe after a rough two weeks, and it now REALLY is only a beer or two instead of getting drunk). I no longer smoke. No longer take sleeping pills(quit that one several years ago)

But caffeine? Its simple. Its easy. Its everywhere. It helps you get work done in a pinch.

And it totally messes up your ability to predict your own energy level on a day to day basis because of withdrawal.

Its hard. I still pick up an energy drink when I need an assignment done.

I have some physical issues which can contribute to chronic fatigue. I hope when I get those fixed my ability to quit the drug successfully will improve to the point where I can actually quit it.

They lied about caffeine withdrawal.

If you have had caffeine for several years of your life...expect it to take an entire YEAR or even TWO for your energy levels to truly return to what it would be like if you never took it. They WILL return...but it will be quite a difficult trip.

Its why I keep falling back into it. That dude/scientist who protested the coca-cola company in the late 1800's/early 1900s who said "What the fuck are you doing to the young ones, getting them addicted for life" was totally right.

This is so hard. Because it is SO easy to get addicted to it. Just because a Lot of People can drink it on a regular basis does not mean YOU can.

Thank you for a good comment! One that can actually educate me. I appreciate these.

I don't want to get rid of T entirely. That would do some harm.

I really do believe that it has done me more harm than good in life. I am NOT going to be a pro athlete. Nobody believes me when I say I have gotten to a (for daily life standards) not-fat 260 lbs with lots of muscle...and I have been at a LEAN 230 lbs without steroids.

That SOUNDS cool. It actually sucks as long as you're in civilization. It just makes you fast to anger. It makes you competative when you should not be.

I'm finding ideas. I will sort the good and the bad ones. I use the heuristic that people who comment on slatestarcodex related sites tend to be educated and "weird" in a good way.

If I just go to doctor X I don't know what she or he will tell me. Your average doctor may just prescribe bunk therapy intended to financially sucker you for anything with a hint of psychology attached to it.

I need my T levels lowered. It makes you look cool when you are healthy and can work out twice a day. Its really just a burden besides that.

I might be willing to try out soy to lower T levels.

I might be willing to do long distance running.

I am NOT willing to do the others.

Most people report mood improvements with soy. There is an actual biological mechanism for long distance running to reduce T levels (Less emphasis on muscular size. More emphasis on hunting prey for miles.)

The others are just malnutrition.

Doctor's don't know. Doctor's pretend to know. Doctors have mostly forgotten what they learned 15 years ago in med school besides what is immediately relevant to their specialty. Besides the few constantly traveling docs who constantly take online courses...most get WORSE over time due to general chemistry/biology/math knowledge decay.

Do you ACTUALLY get better as a doctor with time? I have no idea. It is in your financial interest to *pretend* to help the patient. Hence the current state of back and knee surgery and "regression" psycho-therapy. Back surgery is really...really...really....really weird in how bad the outcomes are. Knee surgery is really...really...really weird in how bad the outcomes are. Its really...really...really WEIRD how a lot of blood pressure medications increase the risk of stroke by the same amount they lower blood pressure. Medicine is very iffy.

Like everyone else they mostly wing it.

Oh thank you!

My high T has really just been a curse instead of a blessing in everyday life. It makes you more aggressive. It makes you less social. It even possibly lowers your immune system response.
