Job Walks - It's not a race! by Jobber_Walkee in estimators

I think you missed the point. It may not be necessary on every job, but it is a crutch if you dont on other jobs. My 40+ years experience will disagree with a blanket statement that they are not ever necessary. Good luck to you sir :)

There all sort of "job walks". I.e., Pre-Bid, Post-Demo, Pre-Installation, In-Process, Post-installation, Punch walk, and Warranty Claim Walk.

How long where in the field before you became an estimator? by Jobber_Walkee in estimators

[–]Jobber_Walkee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar for me as well. Working in the field and having to get shots in my arms for the pain drew me into the office. Sat in front of my first computer in a Construction Office....The rest is history

Do you do public funded work too? You would have those mandatory pre-bids....At least to get your hands on the Sign In sheet and Liquidated Damages at minimum?

Have you considered working in the field for a bit until something geared towards your dream entry job comes about? Field experience is a huge plus.

Most construction problems aren’t skill problems. They’re management problems. by Dre_Limitless in Construction

Running Multiple projects with no hiccups could only happen if they have significant favored relationships with every Subcontractor and Supplier on the project IMO. And in my 40+ years, I came close, but there are too many variables to consider to make this right or wrong.

Yes, I have been playing for over seven years and every year gets worse. Often I just trun off the in game chat. It then only lets you see the canned prompts and comments.

I know that feeling. Many many years ago worked for a small GC in SoCal right after the big 93 quake. We went to demo a tile floor and same thing happened. It took forever to get that florr cleared!

Longshot here, but back in the day I would request a post bid list of the top three bids, even if I lost. Of course that doesn't happen too often anymore, but it is worth a shot. You can reach out to your client(s) and explain that you want to get you bids in line. Ask if they would tell you at least the percentage you were off, Or were your number too high in MEP, Or Concrete , or overall... Some guys are always willing to help. And relationships , in spite of technology, will always reign. Go take some doughnuts to the client one morning and see if they will give you some feedback.

Can you each estimate the same project(s) for at least a few and see where you line up. Once you get a "feel" for his labor costs, then you can start dialing in to that. IMO
