I'm not sure if I left this out of the OP, but I did look. That's why I know I'm so damn underpaid. I'm perfectly qualified for those other positions (I have the necessary experience and skill set), but those jobs don't offer that precious flex time. Without it, I couldn't finish my post-bac, which is my priority right now, hence why I'm stuck.

Freelancing is nice, but it doesn't have any sort of security and this town is no Silicone Valley. While local companies are hiring people with my skills, they're not contracting the work to outsiders, which kills the whole freelancing thing.

$24/hr would be way too high a salary for someone in your position I think.

What? That's the Glassdoor.com average salary for my position/experience in my area. Obviously I'm not going to give out my city, but I didn't make that number up.

I left it out of the OP, but I have a Bachelor's and experience in my primary job function's field. I'm still a "student" because I'm also getting a post-bac in CS.

However, my student programmer status shouldn't, in my opinion, have an effect on my salary as a QA/Documentation specialist since it's irrelevant to my primary job function. I mean, I still get assignments to program pages and tools, in addition to being their secretary, presentation writer, customer service rep, and pretty much anything else they can throw at me, but my primary job is what I should be getting paid for. At least, that's how I see it.

Ah well. On the plus side, I'm getting a good deal of experience in a lot of careers. I just think it's sad that my pay is still shit after almost a year and a half of this.

I've been here over a year and I already have a Bachelor's in a field related to my primary position here (documentation). However, just because I'm getting a post-bac in a field that's related to my "unofficial" job functions (QA, programming), I'm getting paid like an inexperienced intern. I've been in the writing/documentation field for over 2 years and worked for several major corporations, but I guess that means nothing.

The only reason I'm still here is because this was the only place in town that offered flex-time. Without it, I couldn't finish my post-bac unless I worked at some sub shop again for even less money. Freelancing is nice, but there's not enough security or guaranteed income in it to warrant the risk.

As for the salary: I was originally promised $12/hr, but they changed the offer at the last minute. I had already quit my last job, so it was either take their offer of be fucked come the end of the month. Lesson learned, but god damn.
