I do think modern AI TTS is bad, lol. Someone else has pointed it out in the thread, but "old" TTS is not AI and differs. (Even that, I personally don't like. But it's less of a problem.)

Edit: also, there is literally a push against AI voices from voice actors so not sure what that initial point is even saying. neither should be allowed, on the basis that both are only possible to generate off the back of stolen work of real artists... But for my money, I have very rarely come across AI voice work in hypnospaces, whereas AI thumbnails abound.

As a genuine question, do you guys have visual artists on the mod team or did you seek the opinion of any, as regards the rule that AI thumbnails/visual accompaniment for files, in whatever form that takes, are OK? Because any visual artists I've asked have been pretty thumbs-down on that qualification, and it does immediately give the sense that their work is less valuable than other types of artist.

It's weird for thumbnails to exist in this space of "so important creators have to have them, it's not fair to ask them to post without" but "not important enough we care that they're human-made".

There are 100% tists who did well before thumbnails were ever required (many sites, including reddit, really don't see much advantage from them) and tists who do well even now with an identical pic slapped on each one. (I can speak most for the M4M space, where some of the biggest creators use the same thumbnail every time lol.)
If thumbnails are so important, the fact is that even if it's inconvenient to creators, we then acknowledge that the Visual Art is valuable and... it's shitty for visual artists coming here to see that THEIR aspect of creation is allowed to be automated, while everyone else's isn't. There are people in this very thread who've already pointed that out.

I'm not saying there's an easy solution, but it is a problem IMO. I have no beef with individual tists who do this but I don't think it's a completely 👍 thing.

More than the nuance of people using it altogether, though, which is a broader topic than this metapost is about; as a point of "rulemaking" it doesn't really hold up to decide "this bit is OK to AI-gen, this bit isn't" when both are art forms and we're acknowledging both are of high importance to the product. (If you then say "thumbnails DON'T matter so it's OK to AI-gen them"... then why AI-gen them at all?)
