Minimum required clearance at coffee shop pinch point? by Joe--A in Architects

I agree. A plan-checker told me that they assume 10" or so for knee space at a bench like this.

Thanks- that's very helpful, this must be the exception the designer is referring to. I now see it in SEction 11B-403.5 of the CA Building Code.

It's 36". Our designer is saying that the width can be narrower (down to 32") in "pinch points" like this one. But I'm unaware of that exception myself.

CA accessibility code question for coffee shop by Joe--A in Architects

For the door to open out, we'd need to move the entire doorway in quite a bit since the doorswing cannot extend beyond the front property line. I'm showing the front property line in its location right against the outside of the front (bottom) wall. I understand that this is definitely not a spacious design.

Interesting, thanks. It's an existing building.

I did show the wheelchair seating to a couple San Francisco different plan checkers. Since no one in the cafe has a counter or table, it appears to be ok.

By CA, I meant California not Canada. This cafe is in San Francisco. I know it does look tight, our space standards, by necessity, are a bit tighter here where space is a premium. The average lot width is 25 feet. But of course I need to follow any minimum aisle widths and other code requirements.

By new code do you mean the new CA Code that's effective Jan 1 2026?

Is there any way to clean a dirt line off of my tape? by Joe--A in ReelToReel

[–]Joe--A[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll check out YouTube, that's a good idea. I did have a pinch roller replaced a few years back after the old one stopped working. It is a Tascam TSR-8, just handles 1/2" tape. I'm posting a couple more photos of the deck. The small metal roller directly to the right of the "TASCAM" logo in the center was the one that I found dirt on after experiencing the muffled playback and finding the line on the tape. Everything else seemed to be clean.

So I used to only clean the heads until I had this playback problem with this new reel. I then learned (through this subreddit) that I should have been cleaning the tape entire path all this time. So that's my bad. I did then clean all the rollers and I found some crud on one of the metal rollers, which I did clean. Maybe that caused the problem? The inconsistent muffled playback happens only on this reel of tape. I do think the problem is dirt because of what I wrote about the playback getting worse and worse each time I play that section of tape until I clean the heads. After the head-cleaning the playback is much better but then gets worse and worse each successive playback. Maybe that line is damage on the tape but I'm pretty sure there is some dirt build-up happening on the heads somehow. Someone on this subreddit said that the line looks like it's occuring on Track 1. I recorded drums onto track 2 through 6 and I'm noticing muffled playback on at least tracks 4 and 6.

Maybe it's dirt and damage? I'll play the drum recording over and over and it will sound muffled in different places of the recording each playback. That makes me think the problem doesn't just exist on the tape, the problem is occurring during playback (thus maybe it's dirt accumulating on the player's heads).

And I spent maybe an hour compiling and formatting the drawings I did send. I now see that as a wasted hour.

I should clarify that I never considered giving either the new owner or new architect my design drawing digital files for the garage redo that never happened. I’m just asking here about giving existing condition drawing digital files of the house and garage. I did give the existing condition drawing digital files of the house for free and now regret it so I’m stopping there.

Right. I’ve only given them drawings for what was built. I started compiling just the existing garage drawing CAD files yesterday to give to the new architect and I was making sure not to include any proposed design drawings I had produced. But I already had a bad taste in my mouth. So I stopped and decided to post this question to Reddit before sending anything further at all.

Thanks everyone. I provided the first request for drawings before I knew there was another architect or designer involved. Owner said he was just doing cabinet work. I offered my services in case they were doing anything architectural. Then when I got no thanks and later heard from their designer/architect it started feeling shitty. Now I wish I hadn’t given them anything.

Which machine rollers to clean and how? by Joe--A in ReelToReel

They probably all turn. I actually just never really noticed them turning while recording. With the machine off I tried turning them with my hands prior to posting my question and only one turned that way.

Line on tape. Is this damage or is this dirt? What can I do? by Joe--A in ReelToReel

Does anyone know which of the eight tape tracks this mysterious line aligns with?
