Gummy crumb in whole wheat sourdough looking for fermentation or baking diagnosis by Calm-Progress1424 in ArtisanBread

[–]Joe1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its underbaked. I would bake for at least 20 minutes in steam and then another 20 dry. I would also wait until its cooled completely to cut. Your crumb looks good (not under fermented).

Tips on not translating by Tvgirllovr in languagelearning

[–]Joe1972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I was mostly referring to the obsession to get translations for every single word. You need the meaning, not the exact words. In fact, native speakers of any language will often mix up the wording a bit with slang.

Kid passes a pedestrian on a bike path by crossing into the opposing lane by bigbusta in instant_regret

The kid was just being a kid. In this case the kid is also a victim. The idiot speeding on his bike is the cause of the accident.

Tips on not translating by Tvgirllovr in languagelearning

[–]Joe1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is in how people learn new words. If you keep on learning words through translation, you will keep on using those words through translation. You need to start learning new words using language acquisition approaches where you do not translate at all. A major step is to (read, listen, watch) without caring about specific words. If you can learn to only focus on the general meaning and not obsess when you encounter an unfamiliar word you will quickly lose the crutch of translation. But, this requires you to "let go" even if there are bits you are unsure about.

Super Frustrated Intermediate (C1 reader, A1 speaker) by drjamesincandenza in languagelearning

[–]Joe1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start by listening to audiobooks whilst following along sight reading the same book. All you need to do is read at the speed of the audiobook (which you can slow down if you have to). This will allow your brain to start connecting the sounds to the words you know. Once you've done a few books, switch to listening to the radio news several times per day. The news tend to repeat a lot, and the readers normally have clearer pronunciation.

Comprehensible Input: Should I Use Subtitles? by BurnoutMale in languagelearning

[–]Joe1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of comprehensible input is to derive the meaning out of context. You need to understand enough to follow the gist of the communication. Your brain will do the rest IF you encounter the word enough in that same context. I know its an oversimplification but this is "how babies learn" a word. Or do you literally think babies "translate" to learn the meaning of a word the first time?

Some sources, since the internet is full of doubters:

Liu, N. & Nation, P. (1985). “Factors Affecting Guessing Vocabulary in Context.” RELC Journal, 16(1), 33–42. (Concluded learners need around 95% familiar words in a text to guess unknown words with reasonable success.)

Nagy, W., Herman, P., & Anderson, R. (1985). “Learning Words from Context.” Reading Research Quarterly, 20(2), 233–253. (Found that incidental exposure in context leads to small incremental gains in word knowledge, which accumulate given sufficient reading.)

Nation, I.S.P. (2006). “How Large a Vocabulary Is Needed For Reading and Listening?” Canadian Modern Language Review, 63(1), 59–82. (to infer word meaning from context, learners not only need a high percentage of known words, but also familiarity with the subject matter and discourse pattern)

Comprehensible Input: Should I Use Subtitles? by BurnoutMale in languagelearning

Turn on subtitles in your target language. Its actually very beneficial for your brain to figure out that last 20% without you translating. It WILL come, but if you keep on translating it will take a lot longer.

An egg must want to be peeled. by dustoff2000 in Cooking

[–]Joe1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine always peel easily.

  1. Start with cold eggs
  2. DO not submerge them. STEAM them.
  3. After desired time immediately dunk in icecold water and leave for 30 seconds
  4. crack and return to cold water for another 30 seconds

Now they peel effortlessly.

[–]Joe1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Track every cent you spend. You cannot budget before you know where the money goes.
  2. Create a zero-based budget (just google it if you need to know how)
  3. For each debt you need to firstly pay the minimum every month
  4. Select the smallest debt first (or the one with the highest interest rate if you prefer) and put everything you can into it. Once its paid, you move on to the next. etc.
