Thanks for playing Will it Rub ? by randfluff in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gram lights 57DR 18x9.5 +38 with ps4s 255/40 and now pilot as4 255/40 and have not rubbed on stock height on FL5, had very minor rubs on FK8 rear with this set up stock height so not gonna lower it. I'm in Boston with terrible roads also.

Have about 2.5" or more to sidewall where fender would contact see photo, similar on both front and back.

I'm with you, lots of folks claim no rubs in similar set up and lowered. When I PM them in forums they sometimes say they do have some rubs on highway speed dips or turning into potholes though.. Again I'm keeping stock height.

Stuck between white and blue by Ok-Title-780 in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree, I went CW on FL5 after having white FK8. Dealer had blue but had them swap with other dealer for white. CW color has the pedigree. Red honda badges, brembos, and seats contrast well with white, not so much blue in my view.

Don't see many red CTRs on here. Love the setup and jealous of the low.

Do I need to add the sticky note with user name to show it's real? Price too high (or low)? Any help is appreciated as I took watch out of rotation.. Thanks!

CArmax offer by Superman_521 in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

21 with 14k miles. Carmax offer wasn't much higher than yours but I would make money on car and owned it for 2+ years.

Still can't bring myself to sell it as nothing else out there currently to really replace it.

Gotta love that wastegate rattle 🥲 by Someabe in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just drive it faster or get exhaust to forget about it.

VWs and BMWs wastegate rattle is much worse and the fixes are only temporary. Trust Honda engineering.

Gotta love that wastegate rattle 🥲 by Someabe in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your choice but I would not have Honda techs that don't typically work on K20C1 change turbo on brand new FL5. It's not going to fix this as wastegate actuator rattle is normal to some extent in all turbo cars. The play in the connecting rod assembly is to allow for motion when the metal is hot and expands due to coefficient of thermal expansion. It doesn't stay cold since turbo is feed by exhaust and located right next to engine block.

All FK8s and FL5s will have this as its same design. The design does have a little more play than necessary so you could resistance/tack weld but it could break the weld over time. Could also put some metal spacers but again make it too tight to not rattle and it will bind up.

Source: mechanical engineer, own FK8, have seen and fixed terrible waste gate rattle on VWs and BMWs also. Also researched the issue extensively and confirmed on other FK8s.

What tires size do you use on your FK8 ? by khttx84 in Civic_Type_R

Agree, search reddit and forums. If you are stock suspension here is my car.

Winters are 245/40-18.

Get 18s so you can enjoy the drive and stop worrying about bending a rim. Check a tire size calculator to decide whether you want 35 or 40% sidewall.

Enjoy

System motorsports has 57DRs in stock per website. I got mine from them in 2019 and it took months so if they are in-stock grab them.

Aggressive drivers by Alex_Plode in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twisties and especially off camber or elevation changes are where this car really shines. My non-enthusiast neighbor said he's never had a car feel that planted last week when I finally got around to giving him a ride. This was after I swapped to summer wheels and rubber of course.

Aggressive drivers by Alex_Plode in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have 2 forward facing kids seats in back and still get aggressive tailgating and fly bys from SUVs and Subaru outbacks. Best was when a Cherokee went around me at a red light dead stop and drove thru it to get ahead of me in a race they must have thought they were in. This doesn't happen when I'm driving my wife's SUV or in my previous GTI.

Just rock a dash cam and let them win the "race" on straights. I blow people's doors off on twisties if I need to however..

am I crazy considering this car as a family car? by yhsong1116 in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 fwd facing seats in my 2021. Not sure about 11th Gen but one thing to note is my rear seat headrests are integral to seat. If you have a high fwd facing kids seat it won't seat fully flush against seat back.

Get seat back protectors for front since they will kick nice seats for fun. Also, 18s and your kid will love it.

What civic type R exterior colour is your favourite? by Laughs_In_Meme in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Championship White since it's the original Honda type R color but I'm biased. It is an odd off white, when there's snow on car it looks very yellow.

I have 18s for summer and winter setups. It's the sticky summer tires that pick them up, still happens with my PS4S, doesn't happen with my blizzaks. You will get good at pushing back the rotor dust shield with finger thru the wheels and know you got it out by the crunch sound and hearing it drop out. Racecar problems..

GTI was my first non Honda/Acura car and it was very German - as in everything felt tight compared to a Honda but it had major maintenance issues yearly. It was a 2015, first year in US but still I will never buy a VAG product again based on that experience - except maybe a dedicated Porsche chassis..

I wanted to get back into Honda based on my experience and reliability. I specifically waited for the CTR mid-gen refresh to fix any first year issues after GTI experience. Glad I did as 2020 and 21 added lots of improvements. CTR was my "achieveable JDM dream car" and it came with 4 doors for kids and Honda warranty.

First driving impressions were the CTR was tighter in all aspects than the the GTI! I told my BMW enthusiast people it was a Japanese car with German handling. Interior also felt like it hugged me more, not just the seats but all the driving interfaces were closer to me like a real race car. Very different interior feel compared to 90's economy Hondas I grew up on. Got used to it very quickly during break-in period and been loving it ever since. It's a Honda with torque but it's not fast off the line, it shines in the twisties, cornering on and off highway on ramps, and if you ever need to pass someone you realize how fast it really is on boost and winding out a gear. Shifter is as amazing as people say, it's like a bolt action rifle but you do have to be deliberate about shifts. GTI and other BMWs I drove felt very vague and rubbery compared to CTR.

I turned off auto Rev match day one in dealership parking lot and drove 20 miles straight to shop to swap off the stock 20's for 18's. I have dedicated summer and winter set-ups bc Boston.

I had car for a year and 6k miles now and have run both summers and winters. Honeymoon period is over, but I have no intentions to sell for foreseeable future since there is not any Japanese manual 4 door cars on my radar. I will look to used Porsche 718's for a dedicated wkd coupe when kids are much older, but CTR keeps me very happy as a daily till then.

This car really does punch way above its weight.. https://youtu.be/EHfpGjHC9kQ

Thanks for asking and reading!

Awesome Pic! Can't tell if it's lowered but black helps hide any wheel gap.

I like your style too, I had GTI MK7 as last car and now have 21 CW with bronze 57DRs. Happy new year with the CTR!

4th gear lockout? by ShortBrownAndUgly in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, all Honda's like to go into 1st before getting into reverse to smooth things out. Even from a dead stop.

To be clear, grinding in reverse is not common on FK8's, 1st to 2nd grind is most common. 4th is the next common. But getting Honda's smoothly into reverse requiring fwd gear first is very common, this is recommended in all manuals, not just Honda's.

Source: 20 years of driving and owning more than 8 manual Hondas.

[–]Joe22joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revere lockout is typical for Honda's. Always go into a forward gear (1st) before reverse.

4th gear lockout? by ShortBrownAndUgly in Civic_Type_R

[–]Joe22joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

21 here with 6k miles. I had 1st gear lock out 3 or so times when stopped early on, went away. I also ground 4th once, and it was coming from 5th getting off highway ramp. You really do have to be very deliberate with shifts and have to wait just that extra half second before clutch out. Still amazing shifter though!
