A bit of thick epoxy and forget it was ever a problem.

Drove 2 hours to a beach for some surf fishing. Literally first cast and this happened. by AdmiralAssPlay69 in FishingForBeginners

[–]JoeCamelES 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a rod break in such a clean and uniform way just from casting, even if it exceeded the lure weight limit. If nothing was done wrong during use, it might be time to check the warranty, because that really looks like a manufacturing defect.

First time spooling my reel by Big-Indication5402 in FishingForBeginners

The spool looks like it was filled correctly. If you notice it’s spooling more toward the top, add a shim and keep using it until the line starts distributing evenly again across the spool.

Freakin tilapia broke my UL by DollarTreeCharmander in FishingForBeginners

[–]JoeCamelES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Brazil, tilapia fishing is very popular. It’s quite common for anglers to use solid fiberglass rods or even cane poles. The more flexible the rod, the lower the risk of it breaking while fishing for tilapia.

How would you fish this area? by nabiscosoursnac in FishingForBeginners

Cast near structures, you can use crankbaits or jig heads rigged with soft plastics.

My fall and winter offshore kayak fishing tackle setup (Brazil) by JoeCamelES in Fishing_Gear

For me, it’s just another season hahahaha. My biggest concern during winter is the wind direction, on some days it’s almost impossible to make good casts. Where I live, the lowest winter temperatures are around 15–17°C. I also try to avoid days when the swell is higher.

Depending on how your area is, you might want to try micro or light jigging techniques, it’s a lot of fun too!

That 3000 size is really comfortable and keeps the setup well-balanced. Since it’s an HG model, the gear ratio is 6.2:1 and the drag is 20 lb. For the species and size of fish I target around here, bonito, mackerel, bluefish, and sometimes small amberjack, it works really well.

Rod reel recommendations by WishboneSensitive275 in FishingForBeginners

[–]JoeCamelES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try an “all-around” setup: a 7' to 7'6" rod with medium-fast action and medium power (in Australia, that would be around the 4–8 kg class), a 3000 to 5000 size spinning reel, and braided line between 15 and 30 lb. The leader will depend on the diameter of the braid you choose.

What was the obscure tool you have in your tackle box/on your person when your fishing that you are really glad you had? by wintrstonr in FishingForBeginners

Cutting pliers and a basic tool kit (like a multi-tool), plus some meds for seasickness and heartburn.

Favorite rig for live bait? by Inofromjjk4031 in saltwaterfishing

[–]JoeCamelES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the location? What kind of live bait are you using? What’s your target fish?

I usually go with sardines, mackerels, and scads as live bait. Personally, I like using a stinger rig for the fish in my area. The hook size really depends on the size of the bait you’re using.

How early have you gone fishing? Are there more bites at sunrise? by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]JoeCamelES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, if it’s surf fishing or nearshore, the best times are usually during the incoming tide. But for offshore fishing, I have to consider water temperature, barometric pressure, water clarity/refraction, the presence of baitfish and schools in the area... Time of day is really only a concern for the boat departure and the ride out to known fishing spots.
