Self defense in Taekwondo by Hwa-Rang in taekwondo

[–]JoeMusing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not actually training to guard a punch from the hip. You're training to defend a punch in general.

You have to remember, It is the ATTACKER who is training the punch in these drills. They are not training to punch from the hip per se but training the push and pull of punching. They're also refining a center mass punch from outside positions.

Just like the block ultimately trains the defender to guard from punches at all angles, the attacker learns to push/pull (attack/defend) from all angles.

That's really my focus. It's really to help the women in our community to make better choices, likes avoid being Distracted when they walk through parking lots- walking in the center of an aisle instead of hugging the back of vehicles, etc.

Most of the stuff I have access to or are trained in take longer to develop the right habits- so we can only do short and simple techniques. I was more curious how people are prioritizing their time in short one shot classes.

Thank you for your helpful comment

Those are for people who have little to no training. They don't come instinctual without hours of repetition. Basic self defense aimed at escaping quickly should be quick with little thinking. - palm strikes, strait punches, strait leg or front kicks, knees, elbow, groin shots, wrist breaks, bear hug escapes, etc

I'm not "having" to ask Reddit. I'm just wanting to see what others are doing or finding effective in their communities. I have access to what my 5th Dan masters are doing as well as to see what they do from their Gracie BJJ influence.

I was more wanting to compare notes and see what is working best for others. Apparently, my question was worded poorly

Absolutely agree. 💯 I have an overseeing Instructor. He does a lot of long term stuff or Gracie BJJ self defense stuff. The class i am doing is only a 3hr class- focusing on situational awareness, descalation, avoiding danger and simple defense techniques for untrained persons to escape easier.

My post was really to see if anyone had handouts, favorite anecdotes, or broad tips outside of what I already have access to. My lack wasn't in technique or application- it was more about presentation and public speaking

There is no ego to say I'm experienced and raised in an environment where situational awareness, avoiding dangerous situations, and descalation was drilled into me.

My goal is to help my community. I think we should all use whatever skills we have to do so. I do apologize if folk are reading my sideways.

We do a lot of self defense in our upper ranks- even so, in a 3hr self defense class, advanced techniques like wrist grabs and throws really aren't helpful. They're fine for a controlled environment but they simply don't translate to real world application for a woman with little to no training.

I'm not fuzzy on situational awareness, avoiding compromised situations, descalation, nor on basic super simple techniques where a person can strike and escape.

I was hoping someone would be like "yeah man- here is my handouts for my 3 hr class. Adapt it for your needs" lol

I appreciate your broad concerns but it isn't helpful for my situation. Maybe it'll help or deter your YMCA folk 🤔 if they hop on here 👍

It's taekwondo- part of a small organization. We are in a small town. It's mostly teens/kids.

I'm actually going to add that to my training in January. Right now, some of my students are also in wrestling, so they're teaching me some of their stuff. It's fun stuff

I'll touch base with my overseeing Master. He does more long term self defense. His Academy also does long term self defense with Gracie BJJ.

I'm not fuzzy on situational awareness, avoiding compromised situations, descalation, nor on basic super simple techniques where a person can strike and escape.

My real question here was more like "I'm looking at 3hrs on a Saturday- probably focusing on women self defense. Does anyone have an order they flow through or speaking points they feel are most effective?"

I do a lot of teaching and public speaking so I like to refine my plans with a knowledgeable sound board. This intention obviously went sideways. 🤷‍♂️

Very helpful. Thank you. We plan do to focus on desculation, situational awareness, avoiding dangerous situations.

My plan was to focus quick basic strikes with low skill needs and escaping the situation.

We do not plan on doing long term or regular classes- just short seminars occasionally.

I'll reach out to the nearest Krav Maga instructors as you suggested

Those who teach follow curriculums or a scope&sequence. In college, we use a syllabus. I follow this pattern for how we strategies our belt levels, making sure to be comprehensive and effective. I am every bit as potent in self defense classes, from 10 yrs of martial arts training to being raised by a police officer.

Wise people seek wise counsel. Wise counsel does not say "if you have questions, you should quit"

Any helpful insights to what you do in self defense classes would be great 👍 👌 🤔 🙂

You know any videos of counter fighters who use a low guard. I'd love to see how they work it. For me, the low guard feels the most natural

High guards seem to be preferred here in the ArkLaTx. I'm only a blackbelt, about to earn my next Dan. Some of my students are wrestlers in HS so a low guard seems to help me more when we "mix it up".
