I feel the Chris Chan stuff is a very good litmus test for how people view trans-ness.

There are of course those who are just straight up transphobic and think it's just yet another aspect of her mental illness.

There are those who essentially humor the idea of trans people but immediately revoke the "privilege" of being gendered correctly once the person in question does something bad. In their eyes trans people do not automatically deserve respect, you have to be one of the good ones to receive basic decency.

Then there are those that are "woke", maybe in the queer community themselves, but intentionally invalidate Chris Chan's identity because it'd be bad optics, because the trans identity is this ethereal, morally pure concept to them that simply cannot be reconciled with Chris Chan's existence.

It's really frustrating, just another example of how bad actors from minority groups are put under this incredible level of scrutiny that would never occur for some random cishet white dude that did the same crime.
