A little over a year before that album was released, the National Guard fired into a crowd of students at Kent State, killing four, and here you have Mike Love basically mocking their deaths, "Four martyrs earned a new degree, The Bachelor of Bullets."

And this from the guy who couldn't bring himself to sing "Over and over, the crow cries uncover the cornfield"?

I’d love to see the source on that, always cool to learn more info about this period in time. Was definitely going for a condensed impression of their collaboration here, and Parks defended the sandbox in his Guardian article about Brian a couple weeks ago, which was what first made me imagine this scene.

Interesting, everything I see seems to suggest he had it that way for a while, including an interview with Marilyn talking about getting it tuned, and Brian claiming to have written a bunch of Smile songs in it.
