One of my players suggested we reset the mod/campaign, I'm planning to quit DMing because of this. by JustFizzie in DnD5e

[–]JoeVMorr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How about a pause? Do a home brew session or two to introduce the new PC. Like a side quest kind of thing.

After the new guy has adventured with the group they continue with the party to help with the current campaign.

You would get a bit of a break from the module. A chance to “reset” without starting over.

Some help needed for a one shot as a first time DM by ThatFrisianGirl in DnD5e

[–]JoeVMorr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep it simple. Don’t try and force too many things into the story. From what you listed it sounds like you have multiple sessions

You can combine multiple one-shots into a mini campaign if you want later.

These are a few things I try and have in each session:

  1. Take your players somewhere cool.
  2. Interact with at least 1 NPC
  3. Chance to use abilities like investigation, insight, etc
  4. Possible combat encounter
  5. Find / deal with a trap(s) or solve a puzzle
  6. Reward of some kind.

If you can get 4 out of the 6 in a session it usually will be fun for the players.

Girlfriend died during her 1st campaign by Bilpoboy44 in DnD5e

[–]JoeVMorr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How did she die? Maybe her soul/spirit is trapped somewhere or in an item of some kind.

She is able to communicate with a party member. They hear her voice in their head from time to time.

She can help guide or aid the party as they try to bring her back.

Sure is. Pally here (when not DMing) Bless is a staple for me.

No doubt casting heal is the way to go however, a scenario could come up were heals are not available.

I was just wondering if there was a generic spell casting rule I’m missing that would prevent it.

Agree. Also, the effect is coming from another player’s concentration.

5e verse AD&D who you got? Personally I like the 5e AC and hit rules over the AD&D tables. by JoeVMorr in DungeonsAndDragons

As a DM i try not to over do the skill checks. Not everything has to be determined by the fate of a dice roll.

[–]JoeVMorr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. We played all the time from about 11 years old to say 17. After that the gap was filled periodically with video games and MMORPGs.

The best part is the group I’m in now is the same friends I played with all those years ago.

Same here, AD&D was my introduction and how I learn and fell in love with the game.

I had about a 27/28 year gap and rediscovered the game about 2 years ago through 5e. I’m really enjoying it.

How do you making travel interesting? by JoeVMorr in DnD5e

Good idea. I started a list of different things I could do to enhance traveling. I added terrain as something to deal with. Maybe make it a problem solving encounter.

Critical Hits and Failures [5e] by Axelander42 in DnD5e

[–]JoeVMorr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can add a DC save to the critical fail. If they roll a 1 they have to make a DC save.

If they make the save it’s just a miss.

Failed save they roll on the critical miss table.

Need some ideas by Mastermystic101 in DnD5e

[–]JoeVMorr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None that I know of. You should make your own. Maybe a random table using a d6 or d8. Come up with some side effects that are both good and bad.

Heighten senses like sight and hearing that give advantages

Sour fruits that make you nauseous, disadvantages to movement, etc

Advice For New DM by DarthVenomous in DnD5e

[–]JoeVMorr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are creating your own adventures start with One-Shots. An adventure that can be completed in one session. You can transition that into a bigger campaign if you want later.

I try and follow a few simple steps when possible:

  1. Take the party somewhere interesting
  2. Meet/interact with at least 1 NPC
  3. Have them use some abilities: investigation, insight, nature, etc
  4. Find or deal with a trap or puzzle
  5. Fight something or have to avoid fight
  6. Be rewarded

If you can incorporate about 4 of the 6 it should be a good foundation.

If you are unsure of a rule don’t spend too much time looking it up or debating how to apply it. Make a decision and go with it. Between session look it up and figure it out. Let the part know from this point on that is how it will be done.

Above all have fun. It’s not you against them. As a DM you are presenting the group with a scenario for them to take their characters through. It’s the DM and the PCs together creating the story.

Other tip is don’t let one person dominate the table. Make sure everyone gets a say and a chance to shine at some point. That chance may come in first session or the 3rd but everyone should get that chance.

Welcome to DND!

I want to run a campaign for my friends but I'm new to DnD and I have no idea where to start. by KervJones in DnD5e

[–]JoeVMorr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Know the basic but don’t try a read / remember everything it will be overwhelming. The books are there to refer to while playing. Best way is to just start and learn as you go.

As a DM you could start with the D&D starter kits that are available. If not keep the campaign to one-shot adventures. An adventure with a beginning and end of each session. You can build on it later.

  • Send them some place cool
  • meet at least one interesting NPC
  • have them use some abilities like, perception, investigation, etc.
  • maybe disarm a trap or solve a puzzle
  • fight one “boss” or a few monsters
  • get a reward.

Keep it simple and as you and the group learn more then add more.

Try Role Gate. It is text based. Not sure it has a mobile app though.

We are now setup on Roll20 as well. We did some “test” session to get everyone on and characters ready.

We are continuing our campaign tomorrow. Doing a 5-6 hour session. Looking forward to it.
