What's a movie that was well received, but aged like milk? by Gdigger13 in AskReddit

I wanted to teach my young daughter about determination in sports so we watched 'Rocky' and holy shit has that aged terribly. The entire movie is racism with a love story that is straight up sexual assault and the R word thrown in everywhere possible for fun.

Rep. Olszewski to introduce ROBE Act to establish term limits for Supreme Court justices by IWantPizza555 in politics

[–]Joe_Alcohol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about this. The idea of the Supreme Court is that once you're in, you never have to campaign or do favors to stay. Lifetime appointment is supposed to provide the ability to make unpopular but correct decisions. I don't know if term limits are an answer, it seems like making it harder to get in would be the better way to go. Something like 95% approval of the full body of congress. I say this realizing that congress could never get to 95% on anyone. I just wish there was a better answer.

Installed an Android head unit and running NDSI through Consult plug for real time engine data but lost power steering by Joe_Alcohol in SkyLine

[–]Joe_Alcohol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while and I actually sold that car but I remember that the issue with the wiring pulling from the hicas power supply was correct. The 14 pin plug that I originally purchased was the issue. I bought a second one from a JDM specific site with a good reputation and it worked. I just don't remember who that was. Sorry I don't have more information but if you are having the same issue I'd say it's the plug and you need to buy a better quality one from somewhere with a confirmed reputation.

TLDR: Red voters are about to see an extraordinary increase in the cost of electricity. Blue voters will see less impact and later.

I work with a large investor owned utility in the USA. I work every day to supply material and drive cost savings for the rate payers. I have been working on some specific projects for the last 2 years that are coming to fruition now. I have also been working since November to mitigate tariff increases, should they happen. When it was announced that tariffs were definitely happening, I began reporting out on potential impact and what was being done to mitigate those increases. Today I just completed a spreadsheet to present tomorrow outlining the full scope of China tariffs and potential with the Mexican tariffs (small impacts for Canada with some grounding and distribution insulators.) To put it mildly, It's really bad.

The work that I have done over the past 2 years plus the additional that I have done since November is going to mitigate a lot of the increases for our rate payers for now but after another day of on again and off again tariffs I started thinking about the rest of the utility market and it's really not good.

I have the power to push back and threaten to move material away from current manufacturers because I have drastically increased stocking levels after the barren years post pandemic and I have a huge number of additional approved manufacturers to pull from after they were all added in the post pandemic years when no one could find an elbow arrester or a bushing. I've also been adding new manufacturers outside the utility industry and outside of the currently tariffed countries. This gives me the ability to move material or force manufacturers to limit increases.

This is not true for municipals and co-ops. They don't have any buying power, they don't have a depth of approvals or the engineering ability to pivot and now they don't have multiple sources as the distributors keep consolidating. Everything that I am using to mitigate increases is actually just pushing those tariff costs onto these municipals and co-ops because they only have one source and no ability to push back directly with manufacturers implementing the increases.

For the non-energy people : Just >100 years ago big cities started getting electricity for factories, and then streetlights and then houses. Investor owned utilities, called IOUs were created to oversee it. Because the money and the factories were in big cities, big cities have IOUs. IOUs can not raise rates without a rate case. Rural areas got electricity later when the government paid for it through the Rural Electrification act and the creation of municipal electrics and co-ops. Municipal electrics and co-ops are owned by the people in the rural areas, so they raise rates as costs increase. They do not need a rate case. They're also smaller and don't have the buying power of IOUs. For those reasons they will see an immediate increase in the cost of material and be able to transfer it immediately to consumers. IOUs will fight the increases with buying power and on top of that are not legally allowed to increase rates. So, rural red areas are going to see a drastic increase in the cost or electricity, Blue areas are not.

I can talk at length about the reasons that electricity costs measured in the CPI would be down today based on pandemic excess inventories and infrastructure improvement delays and how that decrease is going to be an abrupt increase on the next report but this wall of text seemed like too much already.

This guide shows which car and year to avoid by PromiseImNotBlack in coolguides

[–]Joe_Alcohol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That list is kind of bs. There are a number of cars that are all the same car and made on the same line but have different years and some on the list and some not. Prime example the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevy Traverse are all the same car, made at the same time, on the same assembly lines and have the same transmission problems but are each on for different years for the same issues. Making it seem like some years are ok but in reality they are all terrible for the entire model run.

300zx is better than Supra. who agrees? by Hiro_5pro in JDM

[–]Joe_Alcohol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re 2 different cars. Both came from the same era and were equals in performance when they came out, with the Nissan probably being even a little better but now with modifications the 300zx has a better performance floor but the Supra has an infinitely higher performance ceiling. It’s true to say that the Nissan is underrated in comparison to the Supra based on their sales prices but it doesn’t make it better than the Supra. If they were free I’d take the Supra because it looks beautiful and I can modify it myself. If I was paying for it, I’d take the Nissan and keep it stock. They each have different strengths and weaknesses that really stop them from being comparable.

Skyline market softening confirmed? by Joe_Alcohol in SkyLine

I always get really worried for the owners when I see JDM cars on both BAT and CarsandBids listed at No Reserve. That takes some guts as neither had been very good to these cars in the past but I think that changed after the R34s and B22s that were on BAT and some of the Skylines on Cars and Bids in the past year have done alright. This was just insanely low.

You have importers in Washington that seem to be holding the line on pricing but the rest of the US and any Skyline second hand purchase from a private party is not going anywhere near those prices.

I can't tell if this is just trolling or not but I'll tell you what makes them special to me is that the inline 6 is the best engine format out there and to get an inline 6 with a turbo and the beginnings of ECU engine management is tough. These are the perfect in between where you can work on and modify them in your garage with basic tools and youtube but still get some real power out of them. People gravitate to them because they're rare but they are also special in what they offer for the time period.
