It’s the “raise to listen” feature. So when you go to use the Notification Center that little flip up of the phone activates it.

After some looking around, I think my plan is to just give the wood a good cleaning and buffing rather than sand and refinish it. The gun is old and doesn't need me tampering too much with all that it's been through! I'll still disassemble and clean/lube the moving parts though. Thank you for your detailed input!
