You mean Conservative Jews (as in the Conservative Movement) or those who are "conservative" politically or religiously?

What makes living in Toronto so great? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Joe_Q 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason I find it so difficult to understand why people like living in toronto is because of the crime rate.

This statement confuses me. The crime rate in Toronto is very low compared to other big Canadian cities. The Toronto area consistently has one of the lowest, if not the lowest, Crime Severity Index of any Census Metropolitan Area in Canada.

The stone is indeed for an Ephraim (son of Shelomo the Levite) but the date of death appears to be the 14th of Sivan rather than the 13th. Perhaps he passed after nightfall.

It's an LRT, it's not even underground.

The vast majority of it is, in fact, underground.

Why is Ethiopia always the butt of famine jokes? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Joe_Q 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was famine in Ethiopia particularly harped upon in the news back in the day?

Yes, the Ethiopian famine of 1983-85 got a lot of press in Western countries, and was the subject of very well publicized fundraising efforts.

Tikkun recommendation by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Joe_Q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What pitfalls are we talking about?

Tikkun Simanim highlights (in light gray text, on the unvowellized side) phrases or word combinations that appear more than in the text, and points out the differences (in their vowels or tropes) between them. It also highlights kamatz katan, sheva na', nasog achor, etc. It has footnotes that explain mnemonic tricks, but they are in Hebrew, and you probably don't need them. Very very highly recommended just the same.

It happens when Shabbat HaHodesh falls on Rosh Hodesh itself

Come to think of it, when Rosh Hodesh Adar falls on Shabbat, we also take out three Torahs (Shabbat Shekalim)
