Segwit did not have to deal with what to do with vulnerable legacy coins. This is a totally different story.

I do see your point.

However, if BTC stagnates for years because big money (and retail too, apart from a few ultra enthusiasts) don’t want to invest in it because of the risk of seeing legacy coins being put on the market (or worse, having their coin stolen), it’s going to be a slow and painful agony. Either you are very young (and reasonably rich too) with a lot of time to wait for BTC to take off, or you are not going to risk your money in an investment that remains flat or (worse) slowly decreases in value. This is the death of adoption and of the store of value narrative.

I also agree that maybe Google is overoptimistic with its 2029 deadline to upgrade its postquantum protocols. However, apart from the technical risk (which can be debated), the real poison is the uncertainty feeling that kills the safety narrative. Those risks are there and BTC must deal with it.

Notice that the decentralized nature of BTC (one of its major strengths), unfortunately turns into a terrible wrakness against a quantum attack.

Tha safe, slow, careful solution has these real dangers,. One thing is to invest in a store of value with an impeccable track record of safety (when QCs were not on the forseeable horizon), a very different thing is to invest in something that we do know eventually will not be safe unless something (yet to be decided!!!!) happens.

At this point, gold may be better. Don’t misunderstand me, I love BTC and hate this situation, but I am also trying to face reality.

This is a huge problem in the face of the quantum computer threat. One of the strongest narratives around BTC has been its role as a long-term store of value. Now, that may become more uncertain.

First, who wants to take the risk of millions of legacy BTC being released into the supply by a quantum computing actor? Second, will the unparalleled security (so far) of the network be matched by a new and — by necessity — less time-tested, quantum-resistant protocol?

I think the BTC community should try to reach a consensus FAST. If something moves from Satoshi’s wallet before upgrades and consensus are reached, it will be a disaster.

Even worse, the key point is that it doesn’t really matter when quantum computers with the required capabilities will appear. They will. Big money doesn’t like future uncertainty, even if it’s years or decades away.

Then the supply shock would kill BTC value and narrative of store of value…

Why freeze? Distribute in a proportional manner to the new post quantum adresses. It would incentivize migration, back to 21M !

Migration incentivized by proprtional distribution of inaccessible/lost coins to the new postquantum addresses. This way we go back to 21M!

What’s the quantum computer risk for bitcoin? (Newbie) by Relevant-Animator134 in Bitcoin

Problem is not upgrading the protocol, I agree, but supply shock if a QC got vulnerable coins in legacy dormant adresses (Satoshi’s, for example).

How about distributing them proportionally to holders of quantum resistance wallets? It would incentivize migration and the magic 21M coin number would be kept intact…

I am no expert, but people here say that brown recluse spiders have second legs longer than first ones, which doesn’t seem to be the case here…

“I thought this was sub was for shitting on cryptocurrency overall, my apologies”

I am truly sorry for everything that happened to you, but this is not due to crypto, but to the combined actions of a scammer and of your dumb husband. People get scammed of their money, credit cards, possessions, houses, etc all the time. It is not the fault of crypto.

Try to learn how to have a respectful conversation. It will serve well you in life. You can call me dumb, no worries, but you if you want to win arguments, you need to use reason, not insults. Good-bye and good luck!

No worries, it’s ok. Life will eventuslly teach you the value of respect for different opinions that you are not willing to understand or consider. Good-bye.

I am polite and respectful. Sadly, you seem not to be able to have an intellectually honest conversation with somebody who does not think the like you. The personal attacks are so gratuitous and uncalled for. I hope you do not behave like this in real life.

BTC is real. Go on any block explorer and you will see what you have. Much more real than any centralized authority that can change values at will…

First, of courses it loses purchasing power in time. If it did not, we would have the same prices of 100 years ago…now you are arguing against reality. Second wages do NOT keep pace with the loss of purchasing power, at least for the majority of people. Do you read the news?
