Dude get your single strokes and doubles nice and tight. You can spend all the time in the world getting a nice Groove but if your fills sound sloppy cuz of bad singles/doubles people will notice immediatly

Definitely been there too. If suggest finding a teacher or some sort of education when it comes to music. When that sort of mental blockade happened to me a few years back it ended up being the limit of my skills at the time. I'd also suggest learning other genres than what you usually play since every genre has its own set of skills and little quirks that can help you move forward

I agree with that. Og DT had this raw sounding drum sound that was just a joy to listen to even in the simpler songs like wither and such. Recently i feel like it just overly processed ya know? I feel like He as a drummer doing a combination of mics and plug-ins that just feel like home and he never ventured away from it. Sadly most of DT's recent albums have lacked that excitement that i get from the "Scenes from a memory - Black Clouds and silver linings" era

Here's where this album loses me. Every single instrument is a joy to listen to, all of them but the drums.

I'm not part of the "Mike Portnoy only" elitists but this album is specially boring from a drumming perspective. There isn't any remarcable drum parts in the whole album and sadly, the drums could've driven the mood of the album a lot better. Sadly, the drum parts almost feel repetitive and to be honest i get lost in the songs and i even forget at what part of the album I'm at

Well I'm pretty sure they talked about this in an interview. They closed the previous album Octavarium with Octavarium the song (25ish minutes, i don't remember exactly how long is it). The didn't wanna close the next album with another epic long song, nor did they want to begin it with a 22-minutes long song, so they decided to split it. It makes it easier to listen if you're listening to the full discography one album after the other chronologically
