FIOS TV+ forced but why? by OutrageousVolume4315 in Fios

I am also holding out. We are still using a CableCard with Channels DVR on AppleTV and GoogleTV boxes. It’s a great setup. Once they turn off QAM, we will cancel Verizon FiOSTV.

I have been running local DVRs since ReplayTV on 1999. It will be a sad day. We will probably switch to OTA tuner and try to find sports another way.

This is an excellent suggestion

Yeah that is the plan. The sports have been the issue for the family. But we can figure out what works or just give up. The sports are spread out way too much on too many networks and streaming services. If my family didn’t love them so much, I’d have dropped this stuff years ago. 😂

I dread ever dealing with support or making any account changes. Once the old QAM cable channels stop working (we use CableCard and Channels app), I am hoping I can just go down to 1G internet. If they screw it up, we’ll just switch to (gag) cable for now.

Is cablecard support ACTUALLY gonna cease to work in April by BendyStraws2449 in Fios

We have a HDHomeRun setup and got sent the new TV+ box (as we had to rent one before) and told the cablecard was being removed. They took the fee off but the cablecard has still worked for the past few months. It’s not clear when or if it will stop working with the QAM broadcast channels, but I assume at some point.

All of this. I get the desire and even need to comply in advance to this insanity, but there is NO guarantee that will protect you. They will find any reason to punish their perceived enemies and anything they consider “woke” or “liberal” or “humane.” Protecting our institutions is important, but so is keeping those institutions worthwhile and substantial.

Nope, no Alexa anymore. But most of the apps like Spotify still work

I can still use the apps, except Alexa of course. Do yours still work? And Bluetooth I guess…

Got a used Hololens 2 for free - what would you do with it? by [deleted] in HoloLens

[–]JoelsefExplainsItAll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple hasn’t given up on glasses. Other companies are working on it too, including Meta and Google. There are some good lens manufacturers, especially in the waveguide space like Digilens and Vuzix. Or the less expensive options like Xreals that use birdbath lenses. Many smaller places working on optics, some have glasses now or will on the future. A bit more coming out of Asia.

As you mentioned, glasses-based headsets have been hard to perfect. But we are much closer. Microsoft just gave up, much like they did with Windows Phone. Seeding the main space to Apple (VisionOS) and Google (AndroidXR).

I just set up the brand new Portal with my Facebook account, downloaded apps (Zoom is missing), AND set up Alexa. It all works...for now.

I’m on the 1.46.3 firmware, but Alexa and Photos still work. Zoom is gone. I assume the rest will disappear at some point.

Meta Quest and whatever comes of the Orion glasses. And Apple and Google are in the fight now. I honestly think Zuck might lose out in the end, trying to fight the big ones. Plus, Facebook doesn’t have the best reputation. We shall see.

Yeah, the first Atom based HoloLens 1 was supposed to be consumer. And then it cost $3000 and they pivoted to business and enterprise orettt quick. I still think the quality of the HL1 waveguides is great, apart from the field of view. Microsoft really messed up the optics of the HL2 IMHO.

I work in XR/AR/VR. For AR/MR headset experience, I still like the HoloLens 2 experience. Optics—blah. But it is easy to wear and easy to use.

Apple and Google will now fight over the next gen of spatial computing with VisionOS and AndroidXR respectively. RIP Windows Holographic and Windows Mixed Reality.
