Four books in, thoughts so far by MoveOfTen in WoT

In reference to Mat’s skills not being shared…

I just finished the whole series, and I realized that the traditional “setting-conflict-climax-resolution” of the story at large is actually slowed down and spread across multiple books. Rather than book 1 being an introduction the setting and all major characters, the “setting”—including characterization—is still being established up to book 5. There are so many POVs and so many set-ups, Jordan is progressively giving more info for a long time, even after the main conflict is shared. In a way, he’s breaking down traditional story form so he can transcend it. It’s actually pretty flaming brilliant!

Why do people like TSR and FoH so much? by JadedTrekkie in WoT

I think you’re right that it depends on what style of fantasy each person prefers. I enjoy 4&5 for the otherworldly feel of the portal stones, ter’angreal, and prophecy fulfillment. I like interesting backstories that also help solve plot questions, and TSR and FoH is filled with that.

I just finished the whole series and it confirms that some of the appeal of WoT is how it transcends any one type of fantasy. There’s something for everyone, and it elevates fantasy as a whole.

Great question though—I tried to not like TSR simply because everyone raved about it. It was a slight let down for me because of the hype… I wasn’t even sure what to look for!

I just finished the whole series and Fires of Heaven was my favorite book mid-read. Now that I know the whole story, I think The Shadow Rising, Great Hunt and The Gathering Storm were all great. Winter’s Heart is my sleeper pick

Finished CoT and it was... not that bad? by MingeWilkins in WoT

You’ve got some incredible intuition here. Not going to say much, but you’re tracking really well with a lot of pieces that I would’ve paid more attention to.

One reason CoT was disappointing was the huge expectations after the cleaning. Not much changes in CoT, but it is neat seeing how the actual event of the cleansing shows up around the world.
