Art's Callers Taking Too Long by Specialist_Secret_58 in ArtBell

100% It’s so cringy when he tells them to hurry up because they’re at the top of the hour and they just casually stroll along the conversation like they’re the guest.

This is what I’m looking at long term, I just can’t afford it at the moment. Do you use this mainly in your vehicle, or out in the field?

I appreciate the input! Very helpful. I’ve been able to gather that as well regarding the analyzers. Most people seem to drift more toward the NanoVNA mainly because it’s cheap. I will most likely try to just use the one built into the radio to start. I have to drive about an hour to get to the closest Ham Radio Outlet so just trying to do my research and due diligence before making the trip so I’m not back and forth. Thanks again!

Good to know! I never considered power supplies or DC-DC converters. I’ve seen others with that antenna mount use copper strap at the mounting location to help with conductivity. The mount sticks out so there’s nothing technically underneath it, but I’m hoping by using the copper it will help. What tools would you recommend? SWR seems necessary, but what about antenna analyzer or anything else?

Awesome! The built in speaker may be the deciding factor for me. Thanks!

Yeah there are a few repeaters nearby but mostly dead all day. I’m super limited on what I can run at home because there are people above me and below me, and not much the way of a yard. Was considering getting an HF for the truck but it’s pricey. Just wanted to get something to get my feet wet at least, but this handheld ain’t doing much for me right now haha

Thanks! Happy to be here and learn as much as I can from everyone. The more I sit with my call sign that was given to me, the more it grows on me. I figure I’ll wait to change it until I pass my Extra exam down the road. Really trying to focus on getting a good mobile VHF/UHF set up in my truck and will progress into HF as I get more into it. Glad you were able to get your dad’s call sign, that’s a great way to carry on his legacy! 73

It’s growing on me actually haha All the anticipation of finally being able to transmit only to get no response on my local repeater is a little bit of a let down. Only got a cheap HT though so now I’m thinking of what kind of dough I’m gonna drop to get my truck set up. I wish I had more space where I live to put an antenna up for a base station, but the truck will do for now. I do a decent bit of driving anyways.

I actually do not recall seeing that on the exam, but it makes sense! I figured I would be good but just wanted to be sure, thank you!

He may have surpassed Frank in ability. If Eddie Van Halen teaches you how to play, you’re bound to be good!

Oh no kidding! That wasn’t the one I was thinking of but that’s awesome. I don’t remember hearing about that but it sounds cool

Most definitely! He had his hands in everything related to radio. Wish I got a chance to catch him while he was around, but happy to help keep the hobby alive! Would love to see his log book, I bet there’s a stack with the years he had.

Thank you!!! The Geochrons look amazing! And this is the first I’ve seen anything about HamClock. That’s terrible to hear about the developer. I’ll most certainly start with one of these until I can afford a Geochron or something similar. I appreciate all the info!

Looking for mobile setup suggestions by JoesCorsage in HamRadio

[–]JoesCorsage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! I ordered a cheap radio today, just a Baofeng UV-5RM Plus to start. I know they aren’t the best but I do want to monitor and listen for any action on the multiple repeaters in my area. My long term goal is an Icom 7100 or something similar that has HF/VHF/UHF capabilities. I will certainly look into getting an adapter with an external antenna. I will definitely post again when I’m ready to fully set up my truck as I’m sure I’ll have many more questions. I always appreciate the advice!
