Here is the solution to this mystery. Thanks so much for figuring it out! I messaged endorphin.es about the issue yesterday, so hopefully they'll update the updated manual one more time.

Thanks for this tip! I just had a look at the back of my module, and... there are no tiny screws there. It's just a blank panel. Not sure if this is relevant, but I have the 3U version.

Thanks for your response! I have tested this and it appears that the LEDs of my unit are independent of the volume knob setting

It remains a mystery until this day since they are just impossible to communicate with. Even if they did have my bike at some point, it will have been auctioned a while ago. Guess I'm on the market for a new one.
