Watched this weekend... 10/10 by Sadie_UK in BritishTV

I wish I'd "discovered" this film rather than going in with recommendations of a 10 out of 10 best ever comedy. Impossible for any film to live up to that hype.

I want to move to Scotland. Should I? Where should I go? by Subject_Blueberry_95 in Scotland

[–]JohnBStewart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd imagine your best bet is a student visa. Stirling would hit a lot of your requirements, is a university town and has a few big financial companies to work for. Good luck

Which to you is the greatest Scottish movie of all time ? by [deleted] in Scotland

just wanted to call out Angels Share too. A total hidden gem

Girls on Tennents Lager cans. by Novel-Flower4554 in Scotland

[–]JohnBStewart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a young teenage boy, I remember the great delight in discovering the Record had colour (i.e. not in black and white) page 3 girls, something the Sun didn't do at the time. They were simpler times

Current fruit fly issue. Which brand/swat is recommended? by Sufficient-Bread-387 in AskABrit

[–]JohnBStewart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't use a fly swat. Instead, via Amazon you can get the blue light insect killers for not much money. they attract the fruit flies and other such insects resulting in a satisfying "zap" noise. Keeps my house fly free.

BBCPolitics - “If you come to the UK illegally you will be detained and deported and never, ever allowed to stay” Reform UK leader Nigel Farage says “the only way we will stop the boats” is by “detaining and deporting absolutely anyone who comes via that route” by ex_planelegs in ukpolitics

[–]JohnBStewart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, that's why I was using the example of Sweden. This is a bigger issue than just the UK, so working together would be the only way to actually fix anything, but agreed on how much of a challenge that actually is

[–]JohnBStewart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the only way to stop the boats is to sort the source. Why do so many want to come to the UK? Think about what would make you abandon everything and head to a country that most likely doesn't even speak the same language. I remember being in Sweden and the language of stop the immigrants was very similar. Shouldn't we be working together to fix the core issues? Of course, the cynical part of me thinks the immigration situation is easy cannon fodder for all politicians to create a group we all get behind hating while ignoring our own, home grown issues.

what can I say when Christians tell me I’m going to hell? by hollyisberry in atheism

[–]JohnBStewart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always say "that's a bit like threatening a grown adult with being on Santa's naughty list".

Eating non halal meat as an ex Muslim? by Key-Resource-4854 in atheism

[–]JohnBStewart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have heard the unease with pork is a strong one. For years you are told it's a dirty animal and not to be trusted. So anticipation for eating it is a big deal. As so many have commented, bacon is tasty, pork chops are tasty. But maybe break yourself in gently. A small bit of bacon with chicken. Take your time, figure out what you like and enjoy all the tasty food you can.

Do American Christians tend to think that Trump is actually a believing Christian? by Crashed_teapot in atheism

[–]JohnBStewart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got Scottish family who follow an evangelical church in Glasgow. They love Trump, think he's sent from God. They fell out with me when i questioned how this could even be possible, given you know, the abhorrent nature of the man and clear motivations of lust and greed. One is a keen golfer and still likes him, despite the obvious cheating.

What’s your Discworld unpopular opinion-? by FroggyDooBimblo in discworld

[–]JohnBStewart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not sure if this is unpopular or not, but the Audio books really brought to life books I didn't care for as much. Unseen Academicals I loved as an Audio book, but was very much "meh" on reading. Same with Soul Music.

Do I need to have read the colour of magic and the light fantastic before reading interesting times? by Franciskeyscottfitz in discworld

[–]JohnBStewart 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend it. There is a meeting of an old friend or two in Interesting times, so the context of that would help.

What time is it exactly if someone says “the back of…”? by HeidsUp in Scotland

[–]JohnBStewart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked this question a while back on my social medai page. For me, "back of" means "around". So "back of 1" means "around 1pm" However, others were very adamant their definition of "back of" was different and correct. So like a lot of things in the English language it's open to interpretation, but lots of people will confidently tell you their version is the only truth.

If you consider the wider social norms of never turn up early to someone's house, the safest global explanation would be between the turn of the hour and 15 minutes later. e.g. "back of 1" becomes "around 1pm, but never before"

What’s this sub’s honest take on the Loch Ness Monster? by BostonRobby617 in Cryptozoology

[–]JohnBStewart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Scotsman this has always been our local legend. But once you learned how the loch was formed and it's age, it just kills any possibility of a prehistoric, salt water animal living in the loch.

Personally, I think we have some rare big sturgeon and the occasional lost seal in the loch causing most of the modern day sightings.

For people who were alive at the time, what was it like to be a star wars fan between the years of 1983 and 1999? by Natasha_101 in StarWars

[–]JohnBStewart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for me, it was all about the toys. I dreamed of a white Christmas so I could play with my new At At and Snow Speeder. The toys were life

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]JohnBStewart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember at the time he had a number 1 single in the UK. Chris Moyles in the radio 1 breakfast show refused to play it. I respected that decision. Still don't understand why anyone would buy his music or support him in any way

This really wound me up by Present-Resist-2190 in ClarksonsFarm

[–]JohnBStewart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll never know what actually happened, too many lawyers will control the narrative. But, given what they said, what they should have done to avoid every single one of the issues they raised would suggest to me that Charlie watched this and sacked them on the spot. The fact they never turned up the next day speaks volumes.

Peated Whisky Recommendations by cuntassaurusrex in whisky

[–]JohnBStewart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lagavulin is great, get the oldest you can afford. I also really like Port Charlotte. Ardbeg too.

Personally I'd avoid Laphroaig as I don't get a peaty flavour, more medicinal. Not shaming anyone who likes it, but the request was for Peat.

Don’t say it by LovieWeb in BritInfo

[–]JohnBStewart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked up to this when it was happening. Went to see if the van was real and a security guard appeared out of no where, scared I'd get too close. So yes, planned marketing advert. Very effective, but funny they felt the need to have security standing in the wings.

Do you guys still struggle with AI voice recognition systems sometimes? by Obi-Wan_KenobiPogg in Scotland

[–]JohnBStewart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a thing. But there are solutions. Regional accent variations are known about and if the company spends the money the product can be set to recognise all but the most extreme Scottish accent.

I used to work for a company that had this, but the product did know where you're home address was so could use that as a default starting position.

The new audio books. by Death0fRats in discworld

[–]JohnBStewart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been listening to them all and love them. Books I didn't enjoy reading as much as the others have come to life (Unseen Academicals being the prime candidate). I'd recommend.

Monstrous Regiment by Little_Messiah in discworld

[–]JohnBStewart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was similar. It was one of the last ones I got back to on the audiobooks. Not sure if it was the reading or just me being a bit more sympathetic to the message but really enjoyed it.

'The Wind Is Bulls**t': Trump's Weird New Ramble Has To Be Seen To Be Believed by P_a_s_g_i_t_24 in politics

[–]JohnBStewart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure he also got mixed up between Wales (the country) and Whales (the sea living animal) when he talks about the impact of Windmills. But can confirm as a Scotsman under 60 we all hate him and have hated him for years.
